INTERNATIONAL MARITIME ORGANISATION (IMO)SAFE , SECURE AND EFFICIENT SHIPPING ON CLEAN OCEANS • The International Maritime Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations which is responsible for measures to improve the safety and security of international shipping and to prevent marine pollution from ships. • The International Maritime Organization (IMO) held a convention to improve the worldwide standards for safety and training of professional mariners in 1978. The Standards of Training, Certification & Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW) Convention established a code adopted by many nations on July 7, 1978 and was named the Seafarers Training, Certification, & Watch keeping (STCW) Code.

  3. IMO WHITE LISTWhat does the “White List” mean to mariners? If a country is on the “White List,” it means that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has deemed it to be in full and complete compliance with STCW 95. Accordingly, other countries should accept their certificates and amendments. Mariners holding certificates or endorsements issued by “White List” countries should find it easier to get a job on a foreign ship and to get endorsements from other countries than seafarers whose certificates are from countries not on the “White List”.   6. What is New Zealand’s role on the IMO?New Zealand has been an active and well-respected member of the IMO since 1960 and attached great importance to the work of the IMO. With a remote geographic location in the South Pacific and an export-based economy, New Zealand has a keen interest in maritime transport and the protection of the marine environment.

New Zealand was elected to the IMO Council at the 25th Regular Session of the IMO Assembly in London in November 2007, giving it the opportunity and honour to join with states sharing similar objectives of flag state responsibility. New Zealand has considerable expertise to offer as a Council member, particularly in the area of Coastal State responsibilities. New Zealand recently chaired the IMO Model Audit Scheme Working Group, hosting its own Audit in July 2007.

  8. Maritime New Zealand actively assists Pacific Island countries to implement key aspects of IMO conventions. New Zealand has fully implemented the International Ship and Security Code. In 2004, a US Coast Guard team reported that port and ship security in New Zealand met international requirements and that many security measures were world best practice.

  11. The New Zealand Maritime School has been developed over the past 70 years to become the premier provider of maritime training in New Zealand. The School overlooks the waterfront in downtown Auckland, an ideal location for students, being at the hub of commercial boating, shipping and other maritime activities, is easily accessible by public transport from any part of Auckland, and is very close to a large range of inexpensive accommodation.

  12. The School is staffed by a team of dedicated lecturers who have extensive teaching and maritime industry experience. Each lecturer's specialised knowledge and experience is used to provide you with the highest standard of tuition. The School has always attracted students from throughout New Zealand and overseas. Its reputation as a centre of excellence in maritime training extends well beyond Auckland.

  13. Where is the school located? The New Zealand Maritime School is located in downtown Auckland city, on the waterfront. The school moved to the city from the main Manukau Institute of Technology campus in 1997 and takes up 3 floors of the old Union House building at 2 Commerce Street, Auckland. It is approximately 20kms drive north of the main Manukau Institute of Technology campus in Otara.

  14. Are all your courses held in the city? The majority of courses offered by the New Zealand Maritime School are held at their premises in Commerce Street. The exceptions are Basic and Advanced Fire courses which are conducted at the NZ Oil Refinery at Marsden Point in Northland and IATA Dangerous Goods and IATA Cargo Tariffs courses which are held at the Manukau campus.

  15. How do I find out if I have the required seatime? All decisions on eligibility are made by Maritime New Zealand who are responsible for the verification of your qualifications & sea service.

  16. When do I have to enrol and pay? Enrolment is generally arranged when you book onto a course but must be completed before attendance at a course. In the case of ancillary courses where there are limited spaces available you may have to book and pay well in advance to hold your place. For full time courses, payment is due by the first day of the course. In the case of international students, payment must be made in order to obtain a visa so this is generally arranged some time in advance of the student arriving in New Zealand.

  17. Is there accommodation at the Maritime School?There is no accommodation at the Maritime School but there are a number of places nearby which we can provide information on. The nearest accommodation for seafarers is the Sailors Home which is a few minutes walk along Commerce Street. There is hostel accommodation available a few minutes walk from the NZ Maritime School. Indo Pacific Education Services can help you with accommodation assistance if required.

  18. Is parking available at the Maritime School? There is no parking available at the Maritime School. Street parking around the Maritime School is on a Pay and Display basis. The Britomart Transit Centre brings trains and buses directly behind the building the Maritime School is located in. We are also one block along Quay Street from the Fullers Ferry Terminal

  19. Computer Facilities Access to the Computer labs on Levels 1 and 2 is available to enrolled students at any time, when there is not actually a class present. There are also ten computers available for student use in the Library on Level 3. To gain access to computers in the school, students must have a current enrolment and know their student ID and password. These numbers can be obtained from Reception.

  20. LIBRARY The Maritime School Library on Level 3 is available to students during normal school hours. MEDICAL Students may use the subsidised Healthcare available from the Health Centre at Manukau. Reception will tell you how to contact the Health Centre.

  21. Microwaves 2 microwaves are available in the Level 2 student common area. There is also a fridge and dishwasher for student use in this area. Refrigerator A student fridge is provided by the School and available in the Level 2 student common area. Space may also be available in the staff fridge for special items. Please contact Reception if you wish to store anything in the staff fridge.

  22. Parking There is no student parking available at the Maritime School, however free all day parking is available on Quay Street between Tooley Street and the Fergusson Container Terminal. This parking fills reasonably early but there are normally spaces available until at least 0745. Parking is available behind the Maritime School for $13 a day at Auckland City Council sites. There is also a Wilson Car Park on Quay Street, next to Foodtown, which charges $11 a day if parked before 10.00am. Trains and buses to most areas leave from the Britomart Transit Centre located behind the Maritime School building. Tertiary train tickets are available at reception.

  23. Photocopiers A student copier is available in the Library on Level 3 Telephones A free phone for student use is available in the Level 2 student common area. .

  26. Located in Nelson, the seafood capital of New Zealand, the Nelson School of Marine Studies is part of Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Since opening in1976, the School has grown to become a leading provider of maritime & fisheries training. The staff are experienced seafarers with many years of combined experience between them. .

  27. The school is located in central Nelson, with accommodation close by. Port Nelson is a port of call for the merchant fleet and leisure yachts. A range of maritime support services are located close to Port Nelson

  28. LECTURERS Bill McConachie Engineer Class 1 (Motor and steam) 14 years experience at sea with P&O and Blue Star Lines. Bill also worked for the Marine Division of the Ministry of Transport in a technical capacity and as a surveyor of ships for ABS, BV and DNV. Bill teaches all engineering Statutory Certificates and specialist courses and has been with the School for ten years. Robert Browne Engineer Class 1 (Motor), 8 years engineering experience with BISNCo and P&O on general cargo, reefer, heavy lift ships and tugs then 16 years on the Interisland Ferries. Robert has spent the last 14 years as a recognised Surveyor of Ships and Engineer Surveyor, during this time he was also a recognised engineer examiner up to MEC6 level. Robert teaches all engineering Statutory Certificates and specialist courses and has been with the school since June 2007.  

  29. F.A.Q Q :  Where is the NZ School of Fisheries located? A :  The NZ School of Fisheries is located in Nelson, at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. The city is central to the rest of New Zealand, with excellent air links to other centres. Port Nelson is one of Australasia’s busiest fishing ports. The region is home to two of New Zealand’s major fishing companies as well as many smaller operators. The NZ School of Fisheries is part of Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Most classes are delivered in the New Zealand School of Fisheries building, a two storey brick building located at 309 Hardy St, Nelson, just two minutes walk from the city centre.

  30. Q :  Is parking available at the NZ School of Fisheries? A :  Students studying full time at the NZ School of Fisheries are entitled to free parking in any of NMIT’s car parks on campus. A parking permit will be issued at the time of enrolment and must be displayed. The closest car park to the NZ School of Fisheries is opposite the NZ School of Fisheries building on Hardy Street

  31. Q:  Can NMIT help find me accommodation? A:  We have a full-time Accommodation Coordinator who will assist you in finding the accommodation of your choice be it Homestay, Halls of Residence or Flatting. Indo Pacific Education Services can also help you find accommodation. There is an accommodation placement fee.

  32. Q:  Do I get internet access? A:  Once your are enrolled, you will have access to our computer suite and Library Learning Centre
