We devour her informational emails; Our Director of Marketing has our marketing staff (who are the best book marketing people in the industry) read everything she sends us. She is top-notch across the board. We receive tens of thousands of submissions and only about 2-3% are even considered by our house. Of the few who do get a publishing agreement with us, we are always delighted when we hear that Marsha has sent them our way. She knows this business!” • Richard Tate, PhD, Founder, Tate Publishing & Enterprises, LLC

  5. Which Media are Best for Your Message and for YOU? When you're deciding which media to use for publicity, there are a few important questions you should ask and answer. • Who are my audiences and where are they? It's vital to identify your target and secondary audiences - the people who need or want whatever you're promoting - in order to craft a message that resonates with them. That will also help you determine which medium (or media) to use, since radio and TV talk shows, print and online news publications, and social media all attract different types of people. • Which media will be most receptive to my message? Talk radio relies on lively conversations to keep listeners tuned in. Daytime TV talk show hosts want light, upbeat content. The mainstream print media tend to be somewhat conservative, and social media is great for niche topics. For all but social media, you'll have to demonstrate to the show hosts, producers and editors that your message meets their needs.

  6. Which Media are Best for Your Message and for YOU? • What do you need to do to best prepare for interviews with the different media? Because the nature of radio, TV and print are so very different, interviewing with each will call upon different strengths. Think about what you'll need to do to be a great talk show guest or source of information for print journalists. Being prepared will ensure you put forth the message you want and that both your interviewer and audience benefit. Regarding that last question, you may be surprised by the media differences that affect your interview. The best way for me to illustrate is to share my own experience. I deal with all the media as a guest or news story source because at EMSI we strive to get the same kind of exposure for our company as we do for our clients. We're big believers in the power of publicity to give us both visibility and credibility, so I do radio and TV interviews, talk to print journalists and share information on social media networks.

  7. Which Media are Best for Your Message and for YOU? As an experienced radio talk show host, I'm most comfortable with that platform and format. Radio interviews are almost always just a chat on the telephone. What can be easier? I also like radio and TV because I'm in control. Whatever I say is what the audience will hear: If I make a mistake I can correct myself. If I don't think I've made my point, I can clarify it. Whether the interview ever gets heard again is also pretty much up to me. If I like how it went, I can put a recording or a link on my website and I can share it on social media. If I don't like it, I can ignore it and it will essentially go away.

  8. Which Media are Best for Your Message and for YOU? Print, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. When I speak to a reporter, it's that person who will decide which of my words to share and in what context. What they decide to use may not be what I'd prefer! And their article has permanence that's beyond my control. Not only is it printed in a hard-copy publication, it will usually be published online, too. My favorite way to prepare for a print interview is to sit down for a chat with our Senior Creative Director, Penny Carnathan. She has more than 30 years experience as a reporter and editor for two major daily newspapers, and still writes a column on the side for one of them. If anyone can anticipate the questions a print journalist might ask me on any given topic, Penny can. As we roll through questions and answers, I write down the "sound bites" and bullet points that summarize the most important points. These will help me get back on track during the interview if I digress or draw a blank, and they'll ensure I include what I think is the most valuable information.

  9. Which Media are Best for Your Message and for YOU? That little bit of preparation goes a long way. I feel confident and comfortable going into the interview and this increases the odds I'll be a helpful resource for the reporter. As for Penny, she started doing some radio interviews herself and she feels about radio the way I do about print. Fortunately, I know just the person to help her prepare! Not a control freak, Marsha
