  2. Please look at your index card, locate the letter (A-G) and find the corresponding table group. Put your name on your index card once you are seated. Welcome students

  3. Welcome students Today we will: • Go over classroom expectations. • Discuss HW, assessments, journals, group work procedures • Perform a lab with our calculators (TI-83/84 Scavenger Hunt

  4. Study Groups • These groups may change throughout the year, unit and nine weeks. • Each person in the group has a specific role: • Coordinator • Recorder

  5. Study Groups Materials for your group will be at your table and ready for use. Please use sticky notes to write any questions that you would like me to answer either after class or in our next class - public or private. Post in parking lot as you leave classroom. (Don’t forget class period and name if necessary)

  6. Journals • Each day class begins with a journal entry. These are collected throughout the nine weeks. It is important to keep up with these in one notebook. (40- 45) • Be prepared to complete a journal entry tomorrow at the beginning of class.

  7. Expectations • R – Respect for self, others and all property • A – Attempt any task first with what you know, then ask a peer, then your study group, then the teacher. • V – Verify your answers, your process, the reasonableness of your answers. (Check, check, check) • E – Expect others in the room to be positive, supportive and to carry their weight. If this doesn’t happen, then I will step in. • N – No belittling, picking, bully or sarcastic comments or behaviors are allowed. If you cant be nice or positive, then be quiet.

  8. How do we work? • 1. Beginning - Prepare your workspace as soon as you enter. Get out materials, sharpen pencils, read the board for any announcements or special instructions, write EQ in your notes and start Journal. • 2. Communication with peers has its place during activities but not when given direct information or instructions. When I am talking Level 0.

  9. How do we work? , cont. 3. Noise level – varies with activity. • Independent Level 0 – everyone thinking • Pairs – Level 1 – talking in a low voice to partner • Small Group – Level 2 – may be one or more conversations going on but only within people in the group AND other tables can not hear your conversation. 4.Movement – one member of study group is designated to get materials from teacher, ask questions and submit work. This movement should be direct.

  10. Discipline Procedures • 1st offense – you are informed of the rule broken and warned. • 2nd offense – You receive silent lunch, detention or Freeby. You will select punishment. • 3rd time – CDL completed, parent contacted, documentation for administration. • 4th time – either CDL or D-1, depending on the severity, frequency and intention.

  11. Grading – Work should be…. • Quality • Timely • Accurate • Thorough • Junk will be given back to be redone. Then resubmitted for final grade.

  12. Grading – Work counts…. • CW (20%) – participation in independent and group work (accuracy, teamwork, fairshare, questioning) • HW (20%) – 3 to 4 times a week. May only be 1 or 2 questions depending on what we are currently exploring in class. • Quiz (20%) – every 1 – 2 weeks, students will have a short quiz – focuses more on skills and calculation • Journal (20%) – Daily warm-up. Students can get missed journals on my webpage. • Assessment (20%) – put can replace any quiz or HW grade if higher. (focuses on concept analysis, explanation of the math behind a concept) • Late work is -5 pts per day late for the first nine weeks. After that, no late work is accepted. No exceptions.

  13. Materials List – bold required • Colored Pencils • Graph paper notebook • Composition book – can be graph • Ruler/protractor • Handheld pencil sharpener • Pens – at least 2 different colors • Sticky notes • Tissue • Hand sanitizer • Clorox wipes

  14. Questions? • Jot your questions down so that if they are not answered, you can put on a sticky note and in the parking lot for me to look at before next class. • Private questions should be put on my desk and have a P with a slash through it. (Don’t forget to tell me who you are)
