  1. France Under Louie XIV By: Matthew Mahfood

Henry IV • Religious wars took France apart piece by piece. • By the end of the century, it was a strong united nation. • The hugenot wars were wars between the Catholics and the Protestants. • These two religions had conflicts in other countries such as England and Ireland. • King Henry was a protestant and fought for four years against the catholic armies. • In 1569 however he grew tired of war so he made the city a religious tolerant city. • Henry’s new objective was to restore the damage done to France.

Richeleui • He was the kings assistant and when king Henry died, he appointed Louis XIII to the throne. • Louis then appointed him a chief minister. • They then proceeded to do their will. • They let the protestants pray to their god, but they smashed the protestant walled cities and banished their armies. • When Louis XIII died, Richeleui took the throne.

Louie XIV • When Richeleui died, this five year old boy was appointed chief minister. • As Louis grew, he became a more powerful leader. • He attended many governmental meetings and appointed intendants to handle taxes. • Louis spent loads of his time and his money to change a hunting lodge into the palace of Versailles.

  5. Versailles • This palace was amazing. • It had the most expensive paintings and artwork money could buy. • It took a lot of time money and effort to build but in the end was magnificent. • The gardens were lush, large and full of color and life. • He called himself the sun king and lived in the palace of Versailles where he held all of his meetings. • There was a ceremony performed for Louis every morning called, the rising.

Louis XIV ruled for 72 year which was the longest rule in France ever. • Louis spend loads of money on war and expanding the borders of France. • Louis’ son Phillip V inherited the spanish throne. • Louis realized that the protestants were a religious threat in France and declared war on them. • Over 100,000 protestants fled France and settled in England, Poland and Germany, where they had religious freedom.
