  2. What is the Renaissance? • Renaissance- A French word for “rebirth” • It is used to describe the rebirth of interest in learning and the arts in Europe at the end of the Middle Ages • Europeans made great advances in the fine arts, literature, and science

  3. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) • Born in Florence, Italy. This was considered the center of the Renaissance movement • He was a great painter, sculptor, architect, and an engineer.

  5. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) • His most famous paintings are the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, both masterpieces.

  6. Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564): • Also from Florence, Italy • He was a painter, sculptor, architect, and poet • Many consider him the greatest artist of all-time

  7. Quiet- Making little or no noise

  8. Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564): • He was also hired by Pope Julius II to paint events from the Bible on the walls and ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome.

  9. Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543) • A mathematician and astronomer • His views on science and astronomy placed him in direct opposition with the church • He discovered that the earth revolved around the sun
