  1. The science behind EMDR: brain, memory, and trauma

  2. What is EMDR? Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a powerful therapy designed to help people heal from traumatic memories. Following a road accident, childhood trauma, sexual assault, or man-made disaster, this therapy helps to cope with the situation. Now, the question is: how does EMDR therapy in London work?

  3. Trauma and the brain When we experience trauma, our brain can go into survival mode. The amygdala, the brain’s alarm system, goes into overdrive. Meanwhile, the hippocampus, which plays a crucial role in storing memories, can become overwhelmed. As a result, traumatic memories may get “stuck” in the brain, replaying as if they’re happening in the present.

  4. How EMDR therapy helps It utilises a technique called bilateral stimulation, typically eye movements, to help the brain process these stuck memories. It’s a bit like rebooting a frozen computer. The stimulation helps connect emotional memories with more rational thinking, calming the distress.

  5. Why Therapy Works: EMDR Process Research shows that EMDR therapy reduces activity in the amygdala while increasing communication with the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for thinking. This process helps the memory shift from “danger” to “something that happened, and I’m safe now.”

  6. Conclusion EMDR helps the brain heal naturally, just like it heals cuts and bruises. It’s science, not magic, and it works. Book an appointment with Engi Psychology Ltd if you want to forget about these traumatic experiences.
