The Cause • an acquired injury to the brain caused by an external force, resulting in total or partial functional disability or psychosocial impairment, or both • Most often, TBI is the result of the head suddenly and violently hitting an object or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue

  3. The Cause • Mechanisms that cause Trauma Brain Injury are: • Open head injury • Closed head injury • Deceleration injury • Chemical/toxic poisoning • Hypoxia • Tumors • Infections • Stroke

  4. The Prevalence • About 1 million people every year are seen in hospital emergency rooms for a Trauma Brain Injury • TBI affects 1.4 million people every year in the US • Approximately 50,000 Americans dies every year from a TBI • About 5 million Americans today suffer from a TBI • It costs this country about $56 billion a year to care for those who are affect by a TBI

  5. The Characteristics • The injuries range from mild, moderate, to severe • Mild TBI symptoms: • Loss of consciousness • Headache • Confusion • Blurred vision • Trouble with memory • Ringing in ears

  6. The Characteristics • Moderate and Severe TBI symptoms: • Unrelenting headaches • Inability to awake when sleep • Slurred speech • Agitation • Repeated nausea and vomiting
