African Tribal Artist • Skills for creating art was often passed down for many generations from father to son. • Artists hold a place of respect within tribal society as he is the one providing masks and such for ritual ceremonies. Work is valued fro its spiritual qualities rather than its aesthetics.

  7. African Masks • An important element in mask design is a bold, powerful pattern. • Geometric and symmetrical designs are favored. • Different designs can signify different meanings and connections. • Hairstyles are configured in a way to coordinate with the mask being worn.

  8. Materials • Masks can be made from wood, dried mud, cloth, dried leaves, straw, paint, clay and feathers.

Be sure to describe your mask in detail in your story. • Your story can be set in any time period and any culture. • Your story must be at least 3 paragraphs (5-7 sentences each) in length.
