  2. What is a safe, secure environment for children?

  4. freedom from danger • Feeling free from harm

  5. sense of security • A feeling of being safe

  6. Safe • In an unharmed, uninjured, or undamaged condition

  7. Secure • Untroubled by feelings of fear or doubt

  8. secure environment • A surrounding or situation where harm, damage, or loss is unlikely

  9. Ways to PREVENT Accidents & Injuries

  10. Childproofing • To make something safe for children to use • To keep something safe so it is not damaged by children

  11. Firearms • A portable weapon that fires ammunition such as a pistol or rifle

  12. food allergies • An immune system response to a food that the body perceives as harmful

  13. food poisoning • Results from eating foods that contain bacteria or their toxins

  14. Suffocation • To deprive somebody of air or prevent somebody from breathing

  15. lead poisoning • A medical condition caused by toxic levels of the metal lead in the blood

  16. Asbestos • Hazardous material • may be found in homes build prior to 1978 • leads to asthma, breathing problems, and lung cancer

  24. Communication • The exchange of information between people • Speaking • Writing • using signs or behavior

  25. Actions • Doing something in order to achieve a purpose

  26. United Way • A national network of local organizations • work to advance the common good • focus on education, income and health

  27. Red Cross • International Organization • provides medical care to those in wars and natural disasters

  28. Social Services • government agency that provides social services to individuals or a community

  29. Employment Security Commission • An agency that helps people find jobs

  30. Health Department • provides medical care to people who cannot afford medical help

  31. Faith-based groups • Group that provides • financial support • Spiritual support • volunteer and community support
