  1. Wednesday 9/19/12 Record the objective on the reflection sheet: I can identify characteristic intrinsic properties of a substance.

  2. What we will do today… Define characteristic intrinsic properties of substances (CIPOS). Discuss safety and procedures in the lab. Conduct an activity to identify one characteristic property of water.

  3. Notes: Definitions Characteristic—an observable feature of a substance Intrinsic—true no matter how much you have of the substance Property—belonging to the substance

  4. CIPOS Activity #1 Choose a side of the penny to use. Record which side you are using. Predict the number of water drops the penny will hold. Record number. Use a pipette to carefully add drops of water to the penny. Have one person keep a tally. Continue until water spills over. Draw a side view of the penny at some point in the activity. The picture should show what is happening to the water drops.

  5. CPOM Activity #1 Reflection Answer the following questions in your journal: Describe what happened to the drops as you added them to then penny including the drop that caused the water to spill. What do you think it is about water that causes this to happen? Do you think the drops would still build up if they were smaller? Bigger? Why or why not?

  6. Extensions Did the side of the penny you used affect the number of drops you were able to place on the penny? What other variables could affect the number of drops you were able to place on the penny?

  7. Exit Task Describe the characteristic intrinsic property of water that allows water drops to pile up on a penny.
