Helping your child at home. Reading. All the children in class 4 have a reading book which is either a book on one of the schemes or a library book.

Reading • All the children in class 4 have a reading book which is either a book on one of the schemes or a library book. • Try to listen to your child reading each day and discuss what they have read. Encourage your child to read other materials at home for example recipes, film reviews, jokes etc It is important to talk about what they have read.

Fiction Why did the author choose this setting? What makes this a successful story? What evidence do you have to justify your opinion? How could the story be improved or changed for the better? What was the most exciting part of the story? Explain your answer as fully as you can. What genre is this story? How do you know? What was the least exciting part of the story? Explain your answer as fully as you can. When the author writes in short sentences, what does this tell you?
Non-Fiction Why has the writer written this text? Have you found any of the illustrations, diagrams or pictures useful? Why/why not? Try to explain fully Why did the writer choose to present the information in the way they did? How could the information be presented better? What makes this text successful? Are there any features that it hasn’t got? Why do you think it doesn’t have them? Can you think of another text that is similar to this one? What are the similarities and differences between them?
Spelling • Spellings are given to your child each week. They have a spelling test each Wednesday. Encourage your child to get into a routine. • The Children in class 4 will be given the rules to learn and these will be tested each week. • eg Prefixes and suffixes.

Maths Kirfs • Each Friday the pupils in class 4 have a mental maths test and the KIRFS help them to improve their work in all areas of maths but particularly in mental maths. • Times tables are also tested each week. Help the children to become fluent in their responses. • Web sites such as conquer maths are fun and help them to improve.

Writing Children improve their writing by talking and being able to express their ideas and feelings. We no longer have BIG Talk as a home work but instead this is done in class before the BIG WRITE on Thursday mornings. You can help your child to improve their writing by encouraging them to talk about what they see and what they are doing. Discuss with the children how the writer they are reading uses words.
