  3. On what will the curriculum focus? • 6th Grade • Prepare for STAR English/Language Arts & Math tests • Ancient History • Earth Science w/ Camp K.E.E.P. • 5th Grade • Prepare for STAR English/Language Arts, Math, & Science tests • U.S. History • Earth, Life, & Physical Science 3

  4. What does the weekly schedule include? • 5th - Chorus on Tues, Beginning Band on Thurs, & Band Lessons on Mon. • 6th - Chorus on Tues., Intermediate Band on Mon., & Band Lessons on Thurs. • GATE on Tuesdays • Music, PE Specialist, Library, Science Lab, Computer Lab one period each week 4

What’s the assignment policy? • Most are due the following day. • Assignments and projects that require more effort are given more time. • Homework is anything that is not finished in class. • Late work is subject to a severe service charge. • Assignments missed due to lengthy excused absences could become excused. • Low test scores can be corrected for a C grade. • GATE students are responsible for understanding the concepts taught that day & should do partial assignments unless otherwise required. 6

How can we keep track of assignments? • Each assignment is written on the back board on its due date. • Students must write the assignment details on their assignment paper. • Assignments are posted on the class web page. • Students can record assignments in their planner for a parent to review and sign daily. 7

  8. How can I keep my child organized? • Help your child by sorting papers by subject and date in a binder or folders (papers are easier to retrieve in a binder) • Keep returned papers as study aids for quizzes and tests. • Do not stuff papers into a backpack or into books or into trashcans! 8

How can I help my child be successful? • Help them take responsibility for their actions. • Provide a distraction-free study area. • Check homework quality daily. • Read silently & orally with your child. • Practice math facts. • Prepare flash cards for quizzes and tests. • Encourage them to do their best always. 9

  10. How does my child know what’s been done when out of class? • Ask a reliable friend. • Check the projection screens. • Check the Assignment Board. • Check with Mr. O. • Check the class web page. • Be sure to turn in anything that was collected while out. 10

How do I find out how my child is doing in class? • Review papers and tests after they are returned. • Require him/her to bring home all assignments, even if they are finished, so you can review them. • Check the Online Grades that are updated several times a week, sometimes daily. • Review the quarterly Report Card. • Visit the classroom and observe. • Schedule a conference. 11

How do I interpret the grade reports? • Overall grades are determined by Points Earned divided by Points Possible. • Daily Work is usually 1 to 5 points • Quizzes/Tests range from 5 to 20 points • d = dropped grade that doesn’t count in the overall • PTI = Please turn in ASAP • ATI = Absent, Turn In (due in 1 or 2 days after absence) • NTI = Not Turned In (earns a grade of “zero”) • IEX = Excused due to Illness • Gex = Excused due to GATE • Ex = excused 12

Why are my child’s grades lower than expected? • Common at the start of year as students learn the routine & teacher’s expectations. • Doesn’t pay attention to instruction or directions. • Doesn’t follow directions. • Doesn’t complete assignments. • Doesn’t turn in work when requested. • May need more thought & effort, especially on writing assignments. 13

  14. How is conduct determined? • A+ Expected Behavior • B+ Name on Board (Warning) • C Check (Lose 1 Recess) • D- 2nd Check (Lose 2 Recesses, contact parent) • F 3rd Check (visit principal, possible suspension) 14

  15. How can I help the class? • Organize the special events and participate in them. • Buy needed supplies, especially consumables, that the school can’t afford. • Assist in the classroom, computer lab, or science lab. • Recycle plastic bottles and aluminum cans for cash. 15
