Bioeconomy Strategy • The Department of Science and Technology, in consultation with other relevant stakeholders, has identified three key economic sectors – agriculture, health and industry – as being the most in need of, and likely to benefit from key levers to drive the implementation of the South African Bioeconomy Strategy.

Centre of excellence Output indicator Bioeconomy strategy • NRF/DST funded centres of excellence (CoEs) to promote collaborative and interdisciplinary research among research-performing institutions, and to provide high-end skills development in priority research areas. • The CoEs take the lead in researching various areas of national interest and are designed to accelerate the delivery of appropriate human resources and knowledge capacity, as well s to enhance the international competitiveness of South African research in pursuit of research excellence and capacity development. • The CoEsare training the next generation of South Africans to have the skills and knowledge that will make the country a leading knowledge-based economy. • This intervention also supports the National Development Plan, which calls for an ambitious expansion of the South African science and technology system.

Local sollutions • “Mobile labs is to establish relevant on-site diagnostic testing services in remote and other high-density production areas, which can more rapidly test export consignments prior to transportation, therefore enabling exporters to more regularly monitor foodborne pathogens, MRL, and quarantine pathogens. The development of mobile food safety laboratories that can provide such services, linked to satellite laboratories, and subsequently to a central facility is an innovative way of addressing the problems”
