  2. Indiana CTSI Annual Meeting Changing Research Landscape • Academia: • Continued strengths in basic science • Growing emphasis on translational research • Industry: • Less basic science research • Seeks more clinical validation of academic research • Physician-scientist training meets these needs – but a growing shortage

  3. Indiana CTSI Annual Meeting The Indiana Physician-Scientist Initiative • Established December 2009 • Lilly Endowment grant – $60 million • Strengthen translational research • Recruit physician-scientists • Support MD/PhD training program • Create Indiana Biobank • Support Global Health Initiative • Enhance Translational Acceleration program (ITRAC)

  4. Indiana CTSI Annual Meeting Physician-Scientist Recruitment • $37.5 million for recruitment • Matched by departments • Highly-competitive 5-year startup packages • Seeking funded mid-level MD or MD/PhD scientists • Targeting, but not exclusively: • Cancer • Neurosciences • Diabetes / Cardiovascular

  5. Indiana CTSI Annual Meeting Training Future Physician-Scientists • $10 million endowment ensures future of IU Medical Scientist Training Program • Expanded in 2001 with Indiana Genomics Initiative (INGEN) support • Full scholarship support for 50 students • Partnership with Purdue Biomedical Engineering • Achieved NIH-designated MSTP status

  6. Indiana CTSI Annual Meeting Indiana Biobank • $6M investment in world class biobank • >5,000 sq ft • Goal: Collect samples on all eligible patients who enter our health system • $2M investment for database management & analysis

  7. Indiana CTSI Annual Meeting Global Health Initiative • $2M investment in international research • IU Center for Global Health • Build on world-class Kenya program • Build on ICTSI members’ expertise in infectious disease • Initiatives in China, Mexico, Honduras and more

  8. Indiana CTSI Annual Meeting ITRAC • $2M investment in IU Simon Cancer Center Translational Research Acceleration Collaborative • Program management tools to “map” research course from lab to clinic • Promotes collaboration, reduces cost, speeds progress • Expand beyond IUSCC to all scientists

  9. Indiana CTSI Annual Meeting IUSM rank in NIH funding(among 128 schools of medicine) 1 * * * (IUSM 17th among public schools of medicine*) * IUSM estimate – NIH no longer calculates rankings

  10. Indiana CTSI Annual Meeting Schools of Medicine Ranked by NIH Awards(Publicly Supported) • ARRA awards are in addition to amounts listed at left

  11. Indiana CTSI Annual Meeting Top-ranked Schools: More Funded PIs(Publicly Supported Schools of Medicine)
