  1. Figurative Language • Figurative language is a word or phrase that departs from everyday literal language for the sake of comparison, emphasis, or clarity.

  2. Similes and Metaphors Figurative Language He swam in the sea of diamonds. As smooth as silk. As hungry as a wolf. As white as snow. As stubborn as a mule. Love is fire. You are the light in my life. He has the heart of a lion.

  3. What is a Simile? • A simileis a comparison between two different things using Like or As. • Examples: Hisfeet were as big as boats. They were like two peas in a pod.

  4. What is a Metaphor? • A metaphorstates that one thing is something else. • It is a comparison, but it does NOT use like or as to make the comparison. • Examples: Her hair is silk. You are my sunshine.

  6. Let’s Practice! Simile or Metaphor? • The baby was like an octopus, grabbing at all the cans on the grocery store shelves. • As the teacher entered the room she muttered under her breath, "This class is like a three-ring circus!” • The pillow was a cloud when I put my head upon it after a long day

  7. Simile or Metaphor? • I feel like a limp dishrag. • Those girls are like two peas in a pod. • The fluorescent light was the sun during our test. • The bar of soap was a slippery eel during the dog’s bath. • Ted was as nervous as a cat with a long tail in a room full of rocking chairs.

  12. Create your own Simile or Metaphor! • Create a simile or metaphor. • Illustrate the simile or metaphor.

PRE-AP Simile Poem • Pick any topic. • Write your own simile Poem. • Must have at least 5 similes in your poem. • EXAMPLE: Fairy • Her blue eyes as bright as the skyHer shimmering and glittering wings just like goldHer decorated clothes, fine and smooth like silkHer pretty long bronze hair Her lips as red as a primroseHer bag full of fairy dust and good magicSprinkling everywhere.

  14. GAME TIME! • You will work with your partner. • You will have 10 minutes to come up with as many similes and metaphors you can think of. • You will get 1 point for each simile and 2 points for each metaphor. • They must be written so that I can read them. • The team with the highest score will receive 5 points on the next exam.

  15. Activity Time! • Each pair will be given a chart paper. • With your partner you will create 1 simile and 1 metaphor. • You will write your simile and metaphor on the paper. • You will also make an illustration for each one.
