Commissioning of the MICE Beamline: Achievements and Particle Rate Measurements

The MICE beamline commissioning has successfully demonstrated the operation of the target within the ISIS proton beam. Key objectives included investigating target dip depth and correlating it with beam loss monitors while obtaining first measurements of particle rates. Initial results indicate a small increase in beam loss upon target insertion, with accurate particle rates of approximately 30 particles per target dip achieved. Future work will enhance these measurements and document further findings through the MICE online logbook and detailed status reports.

  1. MICE Beamline Commissioning • Goals • Demonstrate operation of target in ISIS proton beam • Investigate target dip depth vs. ISIS beam loss monitors • First measurement of particle rates • Progress • Summary Full version of this talk and further documentation of MICE beamline commissioning at http://dpnc.unige.ch/users/blondel/MICE/status-report/2008

  2. Target Target: titanium paddle inserted into ISIS proton beam Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6: quadrupoles DS: Decay Solenoid D1, D2: Dipole Magnets BM1, BM2: beam line monitors consisting of scintillating fibers BC1, BC2: 16 channel checkerboard scintillating counters GVA1, GVA2: 20x20 cm2 scintillator CKOVA, CKOVB: Cherenkov counters to ID pions Q1 Q2 Q3 D1 BM2 Q4 Q5 Q6 Q4 Q5 Q6 DS BC1 D2 BM1,BC2 CKOVB GVA1 GVA2 CKOVA

  3. Target Notes Simplified beamline of D1, D2 (no DS, Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6) BC1, BC2 (16 channel checkerboard scintillator) not used BM1, BM2 output partially understood Q1 Q2 Q3 D1 BM2 Q4 Q5 Q6 Q4 Q5 Q6 DS BC1 D2 BM1,BC2 CKOVB GVA1 GVA2 CKOVA

  4. 15 March 2008 Parasitic target operation demonstrated Beam current Target dip Beam loss monitor Small beam loss increase with target insertion No beam loss increase when target not in Able to operate ISIS at 50 Hz and target at 50/64 Hz Beam loss visible but OK without scraping next spill

  5. 29 March 2008 first particles through DSA D1 D2 CKOVA&B D2 current of 170 A corresponds to transport of 470 MeV/c particles, consistent with D1 setting Beam line with only D1 D2 powered Target activated at 50 mV beam loss D1 set to 480 MeV/c Scan D2 and measure rate in GVA2 counter. 35 particles per spill (will improve with other magnets especially solenoid!)

  6. April 2 2008 FIRST PIONS SEEN IN MICE! Two Cherenkovs (Mississippi) situated at end of controlled area powered on April 2. Threshold 240 and 280 for pions respectively. 480 is well above. A few pions were seen! GVA2 scint CKOV2 PM1 CKOV2 PM2 CKOV2 PM3

  7. Other Results • Dust noticed under MICE target • At least some dust noticed before MICE target operation • Very unlikely dust caused by MICE target • Vacuum pumps with moving parts often make dust • In target tests, no dust with ~ million activations • Will keep an eye on this • Counting rates of ~ 30 particles/target dip • Corresponds to about 1010 protons hitting target/dip • Consistent with G4Beamline simulations • Time difference between GVA1, GVA2 counters (about 40 ns) verify that most particles are protons • GVA1, GVA2, CKOVA, CKOVB inserted into DAQ • MICE online logbook in use

  8. Summary From MICE logbook: “A small step for some mice, a giant leap for mice-kind”
