Place de la Bastille. By: Jordan Jackson. History. The Bastille was built during the 100 years war in 1370 as a fortress guarding the eastern entrance into Paris. Later on it was converted into a prison by Richelieu, prisoners were kept here, some sentenced for witchcraft by King Louis XIV.

History • The Bastille was built during the 100 years war in 1370 as a fortress guarding the eastern entrance into Paris. • Later on it was converted into a prison by Richelieu, prisoners were kept here, some sentenced for witchcraft by King Louis XIV. • The Bastille is mostly known for the “storming of the Bastille” between the royals and commoners on July 14,1789,which was the beginning of the French Revolution. • The Bastille became a symbol of royal power and oppression • Today, the Bastille is no longer a prison or anything of that matter, but now paved stones mark its outline. A Colonne de Julliet(July column), which is topped by the Winged Spirit of Liberty, was created in 1840 as a reminder of France's raging past, and to honor victims of another revolt, the 1830 uprising.

Place de la Bastille Entertainment! • Place de la Bastille is now one of Paris’s busiest hot spots, and hosts a wide choice of restaurants and bars. • During the day, the streets near the Colonne de Juillet, people can also visit the nearby marina and Opera Bastille. There are also many art galleries and street cafes for entertainment. • On weekdays, a large open-air market occupies part of the park to the north of Place de la Bastille. This is where people can find fresh fruit, cheese, bread, meat, and fish, along with clothing and other original flea market finds. • On the weekends, the market is made up of artists and craft makers. • It is a very famous touring spot in Paris today!

Conclusion.! • The Place de la Bastille 52 meters high (171 ft). • It honors the 504 victims during the 3 days of the revolution. • Another 196 victims of yet another revolution were added to the tomb in 1848. • The column is topped by the 'Spirit of Liberty' statue. • Most of all it is there for the people to remember the Storming of the Bastille.
