Homework and Practice: Multi-Step Inequalities and Quiz Preparation

DESCRIPTION

In this lesson, students should complete the assigned homework from Friday, which includes the practice worksheet 3.4 and Punchline worksheet 24. Students will learn to solve multi-step inequalities, applying the same techniques they use for solving equations. Key concepts include isolating variables and recognizing the need to reverse the inequality sign when multiplying or dividing by negative numbers. Be prepared for the upcoming quiz and chapter test. Don’t forget to copy Homework Practice into your planner and review solutions to ensure understanding.

  1. Do Now 11/16/09 • Take out HW from Friday. • Practice worksheet 3.4 • Punchline worksheet 24 “How Did the Turtle Call for Help When His Car Broke Down?” • Copy HW in your planner. • Text p. 151, #10-30 evens • Quiz sections 3.4 – 3.6 Wednesday • Chapter 3 Test Friday 11/20 • Be ready to copy POTW #2

  2. HomeworkPractice worksheet 3.4 evens

  3. Homework Punchline worksheet 24 “How Did the Turtle Call for Help When His Car Broke Down?” He Used His Shell Phone

  4. Objective • SWBAT solve multi-step inequalities

  5. Warm-upSolve Multi-Step Equations Remember this? • In your notebook, complete the following three examples. Show all of your steps.

  6. Section 3.6“Solve Multi-Step Inequalities” The steps for solving two-step and multi-step equations can be applied to linear inequalities.

  7. REMEMBER!!!!! Multiplying and/or dividing each side of an inequality by a NEGATIVE number only produces an equivalent inequality IF the inequality sign is REVERSED!!

  8. Solving Two-Step Inequalities… Isolate the variable! Get ‘x’ by itself. 3x + 5 > -19 To get the ‘x’ by itself first get rid of “adding 5.” • 5 • 5 Do the opposite. “Subtract 5.” Whatever you do to one side of the inequality you must do the other side. 3x > -24 To get the ‘x’ by itself get rid of “multiplying by 3.” 3 3 Do the opposite. “Divide by 3.” x > -8

  9. Solve 3x– 7 < 8.Graph your solution. ANSWER The solutions are all real numbers less than 5. Check by substituting a number less than 5 in the original inequality. 3x– 7 < 8 Write original inequality. +7 +7 3x< 15 Add 7 to each side. 3 3 x< 5 Divide each side by 3.

  10. Solve –6(x– 5)≤150 –6(x–5)≤150 –6x+ 30 ≤150 –6x≤120 ANSWER – The solutions are all real numbers greater than equal -20. Check by substituting a number more than -20 in the original inequality. Divide each side by 6. Reverse inequality symbol. x > –20 – Write original inequality. Distributive property - 30 - 30 Subtract 30 from each side. -6 -6

  11. Solve 6x– 7 > 2x+17.Graph your solution. ANSWER The solutions are all real numbers greater than 6. 6x– 7 > 2x + 17 Subtract 2xfrom each side. -2x -2x 4x – 7 > 17 Add 7 to each side. +7 +7 4x > 24 Divide each side by 4. x > 6
