Do Now 9/30/09 • Take out HW from last night. • Coordinate Plane game • Copy HW in your planner. • Text p.66, #16-26 even, 28-31 all, 32- 46 evens • In your journal, explain in your own words the meaning of the word PROPERTY. Think of the word in a mathematical or science context. Then use the word PROPERTY in a math and science related sentence.
Objective • SWBAT use properties of addition and multiplication.
Properties of Real Numbers 1). Commutative Property 2). Associative Property 3). Identity Property
Commutative Property The order of numbers when you add or multiply numbers does not change the solution. (-2) + 3 = 3 + (-2) (a) + (b) = (b) + (a) (-2) ·3=3· (-2) (a) ·(b)=(b) · (a) Think of it as COMMUTING to work!
Associative Property REGROUPING of numbers when adding or multiplying does not change the solution (-2 + 3) + 4 = -2+ (3 +4)(a+ b) + c= a+ (b + c) (-5 ·6)· 10= -5 ·(6·10) (ab)c= a(bc) Think of it as changing your GROUP of friends!
Using the Commutative and Associative Properties • Mental Math…without writing down the problems solve these in your head using the commutative and associative properties. 48 + 25 + 12 4(-7)(25) (48 + 12) + 25 (4)(25)(-7) 60 + 25 = 85 100(-7) = -700
Identity Property “No change” property 5 + 0 = 5 3 x 1 = 3 Think of it as "I" LOOK IN THE MIRRORand see myself! For addition, the sum of any number plus 0 is that number. a + 0 = 0 + a = a For multiplication, the product of any number times 1 is that number. b · 1 = 1b = b
Using the Identity Property • The identity property is very helpful when solving conversion (or unit analysis) problems. Use the back cover of your textbook to find common conversion factors. The Steel Dragon 200 is the world’s longest roller coaster. Its length is 2711 yards. How long is it in feet? Use the conversion factor that converts yards to feet. 1 yard = 3 feet (identity property)

Coordinate Plane Game • Complete questions 1 – 3 on the back of the worksheet. Then create your own board game on separate piece of graph paper. Be sure to include at least 25 icebergs. Record your results on the back of the worksheet. • You may use other quadrants besides quadrant I. • You may start the two boats at different starting points. Look out for icebergs!!
