  2. The present continuous = to be + ing Examples: I am studying for the exams now. As we can see, the action “am studying” is in progress; it is happening NOW! This is the general use of the present continuous. However, we can use it to express future time as well.

  3. Take a look at the following sentence: I am serving roast beef for dinner tonight. What tense is the verb in the sentence above? Right! In the present continuous! We can use the present continuous tense to express future time! Extra!

  4. Now look at some other examples: We are going to a drive-thru later for lunch. I’m not working tomorrow because I took the day off. Extra! It’s common to use time words (for lunch; tomorrow) with the present continuous to emphasize the future.

  5. Now you should complete the dialogues using the present continuous tense. Just follow the example: Where are you and Sue going to tonight? (Going to the theater) We’re going to the theater tonight. • What time are your friends coming over? • (at 8 tonight) My friends are coming over at 8 tonight.

  6. 2. When is Tom arriving from New York? (next week) Tom is arriving from New York next week. 3. What are you making for dinner? (something simple; tonight) I’m making something simple for dinner tonight. 4. When are we going to the mall? (in a minute) We’re going to the mall in a minute.

  7. So, we have learned that we can express the future in three different ways this far: Will I’ll go to the beach tomorrow. To be going to I’m going to go to the beach tomorrow. Present continuous I’m going to the beach tomorrow. Bye, folks!
