  7. IOM’s recent effect on Nursing • In 2008 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation partnered with IOM for 2 yr. initiative on the Future of Nursing • 4 Key messages from initiative • Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education & training • Nurses should achieve higher levels of education & training through an improved education system • Nurses should be full partners with physicians & other health partners in redesigning health care in the United States • Effective workforce planning & policy making better data collection & improved information infrastructure

  8. IOM practice standards at work-Ellie Berkemeier • “Achieving higher levels of education through an improved education system”: • I am currently working at an organization, Biolife Plasma Services that values continued education for nurses • I am able to work and attend the RN to BSN program through Ferris State University • This improves my nursing skills and allows me to offer more to the profession of nursing.

  9. IOM practice standards at work-MarkWitteveen “Prepare and enable nurses to lead change to advance health” (Institute of Medicine,2010). Working in a magnet facility we have the opportunity to change and set policy. Our patient satisfaction committee recently redid the physician discharge paperwork, bringing it down to a 6th grade reading level. We also insured that all pertinent education and follow up information was able to be tailored to individual patient needs.
