Called a (Tawjihi) Comprehensive Secondary -(Academic ) – includes study in scientific and literary specialization. Applied Secondary Education Stream- (Vocational )- includes industrial, commercial, agricultural, nursing, hotel and home economics education. The two year applied secondary program provides vocational education and training for skilled labor to meet the needs of society.

Private Universities – (13) are funded by student fees and cost 4 times as much to attend. Academic Degrees Intermediate --Bachelor’s --Higher Diploma --Master’s P.H.D.

  19. Special Education & Gifted Special EducationAt presenthandicapped students are notmainstreamed, they attend separate institutions provided by the government. However, it is their goal to slowly begin integrating students with special needs in public schools by accepting mild to medium handicapped. Gifted Supports the gifted, whereby a gifted student may be promoted to a higher class suitable to his mental age, but not more than twice in one year.

  20. Gifted cont. Gifted Supports the gifted, whereby a gifted student may be promoted to a higher class suitable to his mental age, but not more than twice in one year. The educational institutions offer developmental programs for the gifted in science, mathematics, languages and computer, as well ad developmental activities oriented towards curricula approved by the MOE to suit the needs and abilities of those students.

  21. Other Educational Institutions for Gifted and Special Education • Ministry of Social Development- concern with the education of the mentally handicapped and those with special needs. • UNRWA - is responsible for 203 schools for Palestinian refugees • Nor Al -Hussein Foundation- An institution for the gifted beyond the ninth basic class. • Queen Alia Fund– a non governmental organization that focuses on the Kindergarten level for those with special needs. • Union of Charity Societies– a non governmental organization educational institution at the kindergarten level for the handicapped and those with special needs.

  22. Diversity in Education • The Government focuses on enhancing the education of students and teachers with many different cultures and experiences. • Exchange of, and exposure among teachers , experts and, students. Exchange of experiences, educational materials and documents. • Exchange of study scholarships. • Promoting democratic practices such as decentralization, delegation of authority, participation in decision making and Pupil’s Councils and Committees.

  23. Curricula and Textbooks • The curricula and textbooks are chosen by the M.O.E. • Assessment test are developed by the M.O. E. • The curricula and textbooks development plan focuses on improving the content with the aim of developing creative thinking and promoting academic, vocational, and applied educational tracks; focuses on developing skills for analyzing and processing information. • Studies include: Science, Physics, Chemistry, Arabic – Islamic History, World history, Geography, Math, Religion, Arabic and English Language Arts, Art, Reading, and Physical Education,

  24. Teaching Facts • Teachers are considered the most important element of the educational process. They provide incentives and set annual quantitative and qualitative developmental plans. • Teachers are distributed according to years of experience and supervising authority. • Teachers are selected for the job through competitive measures and on the basis of capability, experience, and educational qualifications. • Special consideration of employment is given to sons and daughters of the Jordanian Armed Forces, Poor families, and the handicapped who hold academic qualifications. • Teacher promotion takes place after 5 years in a new grade, class, or category, but may be promoted based on higher academic degree or distinctive performance. • Training of Pre-Primary and Basic school teachers must hold a Bachelor’s degree • Secondary teachers must hold a Bachelor’s and one year postgraduate • Training of Higher Education Teachers must hold a Doctorate, some times only a Master’s Degree.

  25. Compare and Contrast • Teachers in both countries are to develop an improvement plan after initial certification. • Both programs stress technology in classroom • Women/Men are only assigned to teach same gender in Jordan. This is not the case in the United States • Both programs pay in accordance with continued education. • Both programs have a higher Office that set standards to be taught. • Government in Jordan decided what textbooks are to be used. Here teachers are allowed to choose books and format.

  26. Compare and Contrast Cont. • Teachers in Jordan are given incentives to improve their status. Examples include, special allowances, housing funds, teacher’s clubs, better office furniture, medals, celebrations on Teacher Day and 5% of university seats for teacher’s sons and daughters. I do not know of any incentives that teachers here are offered, we make less than factory workers, are given a free lunch ticket for Christmas, and pay $5.00 a month or .25 for each cup of coffee. However, our ice is free, and occasionally the cooks will put extra cookies in the teachers lounge for us.
