  15. Global Reading_ 1 Parts Paras. Main Ideas The author explains his understanding of work, labour, and play. 17. Global Reading_ 2_2.1 1. 2. The development of technology and the division of labor have turned a large amount of enjoyable work into boring labor. Because of the development of technology and the division of labour, the need for special strength or skill in many fields has been eliminated. We are very happy to imagine a world in future where the majority of the workforce have as much time for play as the upper classes used to have in the past. Unlike the aristocracy who used to repeat the same ceremonies in certain seasons, labourers are likely to spend their leisure time in dangerous driving, drug-taking, and senseless acts of violence. Workers seldom commit acts of violence at home, because they do it in their work. Part Division of the Text Further Understanding ( ) T Table Completion True or False ( ) F Workers seldom commit acts of violence, because they are bent on their work and the aggressiveness inside themselves, if any, would naturally turn into the motivation and determination to do their jobs well.

  19. Detailed Reading Detailed Reading We go to work every day and we think we are workers. However, after reading Auden’s discussion about work, labour, and play, the majority of us may find that we are no longer “workers”. What are we then?

  20. Work, Labour and Play Wystan H. Auden Detailed Reading_t1 Detailed Reading So far as I know, Miss Hannah Arendt was the first person to define the essential difference between work and labour. To be happy, a man must feel, firstly, free and, secondly, important. He cannot be really happy if he is compelled by society to do what he does not enjoy doing, or if what he enjoys doing is ignored by society as of no value or importance. In a society where slavery in the strict sense has been abolished, whether what a man does has social value depends on whether he is paid money to do it, but a labourer today can rightly be called a wage slave.

  21. Detailed Reading_t1-3 A man is a labourer if the job society offers him is of no interest to himself but he is compelled to take it by the necessity of earning a living and supporting his family. Detailed Reading The opposite to labour is play. When we play a game, we enjoy what we are doing, otherwise we should not play it, but it is a purely private activity; society could not care less whether we play it or not. Between labour and play stands work. A man is a worker if he is personally interested in the job which society pays him to do; what from the point of view of society is necessary labour is from his own point of view voluntary play. Whether a job is to be classified as labour or work depends, not on the job itself, but on the tastes of the individual who undertakes it.

  22. Detailed Reading_t3 The difference does not, for example, coincide with the difference between a manual and a mental job; a gardener or a cobbler may be a worker, a bank clerk a labourer. Which a man is can be seen from his attitude toward leisure. To a worker, Detailed Reading leisure means simply the hours he needs to relax and rest in order to work efficiently. He is therefore more likely to take too little leisure than too much; workers die of heart attacks and forget their wives’ birthdays. To the labourer, on the other hand, leisure means freedom from compulsion, so that it is natural for him to imagine that the fewer hours he has to spend labouring, and the more hours he is free to play, the better.

  23. Detailed Reading_t4-5.1 What percentage of the population in a modern technological society are, like myself, in the fortunate position of being workers? At a guess, I would say sixteen percent, and I do not think that figure is likely to get bigger in the future. Technology and the division of labour have done two things: by eliminating in many fields the need for special strength or skill, they have made a very large number of paid occupations which formerly were enjoyable work into boring labour, and by increasing productivity they have reduced the number of necessary labouring hours. It is already possible to imagine a society in which the majority of the population, that is to say, its labourers, will have almost as much leisure as in earlier times was enjoyed by the aristocracy. When one recalls how aristocracies in the past actually behaved, the prospect is not cheerful.Indeed, the problem of dealing with boredom may be even more difficult for such a future mass society than it was for aristocracies. Detailed Reading

  24. Detailed Reading_t5.2 The latter, for example, ritualized their time; there was a season to shoot grouse, a season to spend in town, etc. The masses are more likely to replace an unchanging ritual by fashion which changes as often aspossiblein the economicinterest of Detailed Reading certain people. Again, the masses cannot go in for hunting, forvery soon there would be no animals left to hunt. For other aristocratic amusements like gambling, dueling, and warfare, it may be only too easy to find equivalents in dangerous driving, drug-taking, and senseless acts of violence.

  25. Detailed Reading_t5.3 Workers seldom commit acts of violence, because they can put their aggression into their work, be it physical like the work of a smith, or mental like the work of a scientist or an artist. The role of aggression in mental work is aptly expressed by the phrase “getting one’s teeth into a problem”. Detailed Reading

  26. Detailed Reading_ In a society… In a society where slavery in the strict sense has been abolished, whether what a man does has social value depends on whether he is paid money to do it, but a labourer today can rightly be called a wage slave. Detailed Reading 1. Why does the author call a labourer a wage slave? The author calls a labourer a wage slave because a labourer’s social value depends on the money he is paid. To a labourer, the job that society offers him is of no interest to him. He is compelled to take it because he has to earn a living and support his family. 2. What is the implied meaning of this sentence? Just like slaves in the past, labourers are compelled to do jobs that they don’t really enjoy. As a result, the only difference between a labourer and a slave is that one is paid while the other is not.

  27. Detailed Reading_ A man is a worker… A man is a worker if he is personally interested in the job which society pays him to do; what from the point of view of society is necessary labour is from his own point of view voluntary play. Detailed Reading What does “voluntary play” mean in this context? “Voluntary play” in the context means the job one enjoys doing.

  28. Detailed Reading_ The difference does … The difference does not, for example, coincide with the difference between a manual and a mental job; a gardener or a cobbler may be a worker, a bank clerk a labourer. Detailed Reading What can we infer from this sentence? According to the author, whether one is a worker or a labourer does not depend on the kind of job he or she does but on whether he or she really enjoys doing the job. Therefore, a gardener or a cobbler may be a worker if he is interested in his job, while a bank clerk is a labourer if he is bored with his job.

  29. Detailed Reading_ He is therefore more likely … He is therefore more likely to take too little leisure than too much; workers die of heart attacks and forget their wives’ birthdays. Detailed Reading 1. Why is a worker likely to take too little leisure? Because to a worker, leisure means simply the time he needs to relax and rest in order to work more efficiently. 2. Translate this sentence into Chinese. 所以,他可能只有少量的闲暇,而不会有大量的空闲。工作者可能会死于心脏病,并会忘记自己妻子的生日。

  30. Detailed Reading_ What they know … It is already possible to imagine a society in which the majority of the population, that is to say, its labourers, will have almost as much leisure as in earlier times was enjoyed by the aristocracy. Detailed Reading 1. Paraphrase this sentence. We can already imagine a world where the majority of the workforce have as much leisure time as the upper classes used to have in the past. 2. Translate this sentence into Chinese. 已经可以想象出这样一个社会:其人口的大多数,也就是其中的劳动者们,将会享受到早期贵族们才能享受到的几乎同样多的休闲。

  31. Detailed Reading_ When one recalls … Detailed Reading When one recalls how aristocracies in the past actually behaved, the prospect is not cheerful. What does this sentence imply? If today’s labourers who have almost as much leisure time as aristocracies in the past, should kill their time by indulging in dangerous and meaningless activities, it would have a great negative impact on society. With such a prospect in mind, one cannot but feel worried.

  32. Detailed Reading_ Indeed … Indeed, the problem of dealing with boredom may be even more difficult for such a future mass society than it was for aristocracies. Detailed Reading Translate this sentence into Chinese. 的确,在未来这样一个大众社会里,人们要解决“无聊”这个问题,也许比过去的贵族们要困难得多。

  33. Detailed Reading_ The masses are… The masses are more likely to replace an unchanging ritual by fashion which changes as often as possible in the economic interest of certain people. Detailed Reading Paraphrase this sentence. Unlike the aristocracy, ordinary people spend too much leisure time following fashions that change frequently in the economic interest of certain people.

  34. Detailed Reading_ For other aristocratic… For other aristocratic amusements like gambling, dueling, and warfare, it may be only too easy to find equivalents in dangerous driving, drug-taking, and senseless acts of violence. Detailed Reading What can we infer from this sentence? Unlike aristocracies, labourers cannot afford activities like gambling, dueling, and warfare, yet they may easily find similar amusements available in the modern society by spending their excessive leisure time in driving dangerously, taking drugs, or committing senseless acts of violence.

  35. Detailed Reading_ Workers seldom commit… Workers seldom commit acts of violence, because they can put their aggression into their work, be it physical like the work of a smith, or mental like the work of a scientist or an artist. Detailed Reading • Why do you think workers can put their aggression into their • work? Workers usually enjoy what they are doing, so they are willing to spend most of their time and energy on their jobs. As they are bent on their work, the aggressiveness inside themselves, if any, would naturally turn into the motivation and determination to do their jobs well. 2.
