P/J Math Week 3 Session 1Into the Details… • “A problem solving environment is one where students are encouraged to think independently or with their peers rather than waiting for the teacher to do the modelling...” (Small, ch. 5, p. 96). • Problem Solving: • A Focus on Teaching Through Problem Solving (TTPS) • First, an introduction to Problem Solving, and TTPS • Start: The first 8 slides of the the PPT, “TTPS-Perspectives” • Then—the LNS three-part (or four-part) lesson template: Handout to all. • [See also Sample Lesson Plan 4 in PT Handbook]

  4. P/J Math Week 3 Session 1 • To find the “TTPS-Perspectives” PowerPoint--- • Go to EDUC 4274 Resources in Franks’ website • http://www.faculty.nipissingu.ca/dougf/ • And now... A look again in more detail at the Pattern Block Families investigation from last day. • Two handouts: • A shortened version of the problem statement • A set of questions to consider today • Re-posting the seven PBF reporting charts • Into two sets (A & B); into two sets of table groups

P/J Math Problem Solving:Patterning and Geometry Context--Analysis • Pattern Block Families Group Activity Analysis • Two principal activities in the next 30-40 minutes: • A deeper look at the geometry of the six Pattern Block pieces (see handout): • Keep a personal record only—no need for chart paper • Materials: text, online info, protractor, ruler, pattern blocks • Intention: To support your content knowledge development

P/J Math Problem Solving:Patterning and Geometry Context—Analysis--2 • Pattern Block Families Group Activity Analysis -2 • Consider a series of questions regarding the problem itself and group responses to it. (see handout) • Record key points of your discussion but no need to put on chart paper. Be prepared to share, discuss. • Intention: To support your pedagogical content knowledge. • Must have min. of 15 minutes to discuss
