  1. Buon Natale! • An Introductory Lesson on Advent • by Kelly Soifer

  2. Talk among yourselves... • What Christmas traditions did you grow up with?

  3. What is Advent about? • The word “advent” comes from the Latin word “adventus” or COMING. It’s a time to reflect & remember the anticipation that was felt in waiting for the FIRST COMING of the Messiah. • The things we learn from that celebration are to instruct us as we look forward to the SECOND COMING of Christ. • So Advent is not as much about “coming” as it is about “waiting,” and how to do that in our daily lives.

  4. What is the PURPOSE of Advent? TO REMEMBER WE’RE ON A JOURNEY

  5. We’re joining the church throughout history • Hebrews 11:13-16 (NRSV) • All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

  6. Think about it... • Hebrews 12:1-2 (NRSV) • Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. What are the types of things that weigh you down?

  7. Henri Nouwen • “Waiting is essential to the spiritual life. But waiting as a disciple of Jesus is not an empty waiting. It is a waiting with a promise in our hearts that makes already present what we are waiting for. We wait during Advent for the birth of Jesus. We wait after Easter for the coming of the Spirit, and after the ascension of Jesus we wait for his coming again in glory. We are always waiting, but it is a waiting in the conviction that we have already seen God's footsteps.” What are YOU waiting for?
