  1. Milan Kapel, General ManagerMilan@BerkshireHills.us Tee It Forward

  2. My family has owned our course since 1964, from 64’ to 82’ it was a Private course, in 83’ we opened it to the public but only for golf outings.

  3. In 84’ we leased the course to another operator until 2007. In 2008, my theory was to make the course harder to bring back the better players and discourage the not so good players.

  4. My theory didn’t work because the better players returned, however so did the “not so good players”.We had to make the course easier.

  5. The average score for all amateur golfers is over 100!Most golfers over-estimate their drives by 20 to 40 yards. MEN WOMENAvg driver distance 200-260 yds 150-200 ydsAvg 6 iron 130-160 yds 70-130 ydsAvg pitching wedge 80-120 yds 50-80 yds

  6. I heard of “Family Tees” & used the NGCOA Listserve for help. I received a reply from Arthur Little explaining exactly how to make changes and layout our course to be more friendly and easier to play.

  7. In some research we calculated it would cost at least $2,000 per tee box to build. We didn’t have that kind of money sitting around waiting for me to spend it.

  8. My idea was to place the new tees in the fairway and tell everyone that they were in a “Beta Test” for one year to make sure that they are positioned in the right place.

  9. Our new tees are non-denominational tees. We don’t have any RED tees. We chose Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, Brown and Yellow. Unless you buy “Custom” markers, painting your own will save $$.

  10. So Where Do You Start? The relationship of sets of tees to each other is critical and how they are positioned in proportion to one another (not just the pure yardage) is one of the most important concepts in Arthur Littles’ Design Fairness

  11. Our course is set up like this: Based off of the Blue TeesOrange 6698 105%Blue 6372 100%Green 5800 91%Purple 5474 86%Brown 4461 70%Yellow 4181 65%

  12. When designing your tees take into account, uphill, downhill slopes, water, carry over hazards, bunkers, elevated greens, prevailing winds, ravines, cross rough, etc.Eliminate forced carries and allow the fairway cut to be reached with a well struck shot.

  13. Educating the Public is Critical to the success of your program. On our driving range we placed Colored Flags that represent what tee should be used. Most balls are closer to the Green and Purple Flags and very few are near the Orange Flag.

  14. SHOW ME THE MONEY Our Overall Sales increased by 11.42% Seniors 10.7% Outings 8.4% Women 10.1% 2012 Will be Better as we educate more customers
