Lacy High School Goal • We will produce globally competitive students • Every student will graduate college and career ready • Baseline: 2009-2010- Graduation rate: 76.1% • Baseline: 2010-2011- Graduation Rate: 83.7% • Implement innovation afterschool enrichment and intervention programs • GEAR UP and GEAR UP Summer Enrichment Program • We will collaborate with parents, community and higher education partners to promote student success • Collaborate with community colleges and public and private universities and colleges to provide enhanced educational opportunities for students and staff

GEAR UP No Cost Extension • Results of summer conversations and a meeting with the GEAR UP regional director on September 19, 2011, the school and district wanted to continue with GEAR UP at the high school level serving 10th-12th grader and acceptance of the no cost extension grant from GEAR UP the following 3 performance measures were developed to operate GEAR UP for the one year no cost extension. • Performance 8.1- Increase the academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education for GEAR UP students • Performance 8.2- Increase the rate of High School graduation and participation in postsecondary education for GEAR UP students • Performance 8.3- Increase GEAR UP students’ and their families knowledge of post secondary education options, preparation and financing

Lacy Graduate Intentions • 2010-2011 More students attended a college/university than in the past two years • GEAR UP Exposed students to more opportunities through field trips and college tours • In support of the goal that every student graduates college and career ready, we see the benefits of attending college tours sponsored by GEAR UP

  16. Outline of Plan • GEAR Up published a list of GEAR UP days for Spring 2012. In addition to previously scheduled tours, we added NC State GEAR UP day (November 2011) • Team developed an outline Google Document for students to register for field trips. Information included the following: • Name • Grade • Have you ever visited this campus • email • Been involved in GEAR UP or AVID • Discipline Referrals • Reasons for interest in this school • Future Educational Plans

Outline of Plan Team developed a poster advertising upcoming field trips, contact information and how to register for trips (January 2012) Two members of the team advertised in classrooms through short presentations, flyers were placed in teacher’s boxes along with an email sent to all staff about field trips

Outline of Plan • NC State Field Trip Only • An Alert Now message was developed and presented to principal to read during weekly contact with parents (January) • Message Announcement Below: • Attention Parents of 10th, 11th and 12 graders! Will your child be attending NC STATE in the Fall? Does your child have an interest in attending NC State? If so, please travel with us on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 to the NC STATE GEAR UP Day. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the campus, attend a parent informational session and take a tour of the campus. There will also be Spanish Tours available. Lunch and transportation will be provided. If interested in attending this field trip, please contact Miss Chameeka N. Smith at 336-625-6186 for more information or to add your name to this list!Space is limited~

Reflections • Overall, we had over 30 students and five parents to attend this event/field trip • In addition, our students field trip appeared in the our district’s weekly electronic newsletter that is distributed to the entire community. • The community is now are of the positive events that are taking place at the high school as we continue to strengthen our college-going culture through GEAR UP

Lesson Learned/Next Steps/Future Needs • The importance of building a team to carry out school and district assignments • Informing parents of college tours and providing opportunities to attend these tours strengthens to community and postsecondary awareness • Publish a brief write up to “The Peak”, a state wide GEAR UP newsletter • More field trips to expose students to postsecondary education opportunities • Funding needed to sponsor field trips • Continue to keep a college-going culture within the high school Lessons Learned Next Steps/Future Needs
