  4. #3 • Preview the reading selection. • Read the title. • Read the first paragraph. • Read the last paragraph. • Skim over the entire selection. • Read the selection.

  5. #4 • Read the entire question and ALL answer choices before marking an answer.

  6. #4b • Underline key words and phrases in the question.

  7. Watch for words such as: • NOT • ALL • ALWAYS • NEVER • MOST • ONLY

  8. #4c Process of Elimination • Look at the answer choices. • Eliminate any answer that you know is wrong. • Choose the best answer from the remaining choices. P.O.E. STRATEGY

  9. REMEMBER!!! • DO NOT CHANGE AN ANSWER UNLESS YOU KNOW IT IS WRONG!!! USUALLY YOUR FIRST CHOICE IS THE CORRECT CHOICE!

  10. #5 • Answer ALL the questions. • You are not penalized for wrong responses.

  11. #6 CONCENTRATE!CONCENTRATE!! DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE DISTRACTED BY NOISES OR MOVEMENT AROUND YOU.

  23. MAIN IDEA • Figuring out the Main Idea • As you read, ask yourself, “What is this mostly about?” • Look at the first and last sentence of the paragraph. Sometimes the main idea will be directly stated. • If the main idea is not directly stated, it is IMPLIED.

FACTS AND DETAILS • Facts and details help you understand the main idea more completely. • They explain the who, what, when, where, why and how of the main idea. • Describe a person, place or thing • Tell the order in which things happen • Explain how to do something • Share an experience, idea, or opinion • Help you picture where a story takes place • Understand what characters are like
