  1. Implementation of Board Direction to Expand High School Course Offerings Board of Education Meeting February 7, 2012

Background • The Board gave direction to offer additional high school courses that meet core content graduation requirements and to provide variety of choices • The following district courses can be identified as core content credit courses (in addition to the courses that have been added based on previous board actions). • Most would need to be reviewed by teacher committees to ensure that state standards are addressed

  3. English Language Arts • Rhetoric and Literary Analysis, Grade 12 • Speech, Grades 9-12 • Competitive Speech, Grades 9-12 • Business Communications, Grades 11-12 (CTE) • Creative Writing, Grades 9-12 • Intensive Intervention Reading, Grades 9-12 (currently in place based on previous Board direction)

  4. Mathematics • Introduction to Business, Grades 10-12 (CTE) • Accounting, Grades 10-12 (CTE)

  5. Science • Ornamental Horticulture, Grades 10-12, (CTE) • Food Science, Grades 9-12, (CTE) • Medical Assisting, Grades 11-12 (CTE)

  6. Social Studies • AVID, Grade 9

  7. Option 1 • Board Approval February 7, 2012 • Courses offered through the course selection process starting Feb.8, 2012 • Teacher Committees review curriculum and modify if necessary to address state standards • Communication with core content teachers • Courses in place for the 2012-2013 school year

  8. Option 2 • Board consensus on direction, February 7, 2012 • Teacher committees review curriculum and modify if necessary to address state standards (now through next fall) • Curriculum Council review and provide recommendation (next fall) • Board agenda (by December 1, 2012) • Communication to core content teachers • Courses in place for the 2013-2014 school year
