  6. SEQUENCE OF EVENTS • 06 Sep 12: 1st dumping of a tractor load. Place started releasing foul odour. • 08 Sep 12: 2nd Dumping of tractor load. Place started stinking and a huge increase in fly population was observed. • 10 Sep 12 • Noon: Feedback obtained from random passers by (100% reported all pervasive STRONG PUTRID (rotten food waste / dead rat, etc) smells. • Evening 5PM: Application of remediation nutrients by spray machine. There was an immediate reduction of smell. • Night 9PM: Feedback obtained from a random bystander (Could just barely discern a ‘chemical’ smell and that too after explaining the situation to him) • 11 Sep 12 : Application of 2nd Round of remediation solution. Feedback obtained from another set of independent survey revealed that ‘No Smell Exists’ even after exposing them to garbage. Flies have diminished considerably. • 12 Sep 12 : Application of 3rd Round. Smell has vanished completely and flies are just a few. • Sept to Nov : Appraisal of composting status (in progress).

OLFACTORY SENSESMeasuring Odour Concentration • Odour concentration is an odour's pervasiveness. • To measure odour sensation, an odour is diluted to reach a threshold for • detection or • recognition threshold. • The detection threshold is the concentration of an odour in air when 50% of a population can distinguish between the odorous sample and an odour free blank. • The recognition threshold is the concentration of an odour in air in which 50% of a population can discern (type of smell) from an odorous sample and odour free blank. • The recognition odour threshold is usually2 to 5 timeshigher than the detection threshold…

TYPES & INTENSITY OF SMELLS Intensity of Odours • 0 - no odour • 1 - very weak (detection threshold) • 2 – weak • 3 – distinct • 4 – strong • 5 - very strong • 6 - intolerable Seven Primary Odours • Musky- perfumes/aftershave • Putrid- rotten eggs/ food • Pungent- vinegar • Camphoraceous - mothballs • Ethereal - dry cleaning fluid • Floral - roses • Peppermint y - mint gum

  10. 10 SEP 12 FEEDBACK – BEFORE REMEDIATION DAY 12:30PM • Seven random passers by queried for smell; the garbage dump was not visible across the wall:- • 100% reported Putrid Smell (Rotten Eggs, Dead Rat, etc). • 42% reported VERY STRONG putrid smell • 42% reported STRONG putrid smell. • 16% reported DISTINCT putrid smell

  11. FEEDBACK AFTER REMEDIATION After Remediation, within 30 minutes, the smell had diminished. After 5 hours, the smell was almost gone. Only wafts came when wind directly blew. The smell had reduced to WEAK intensity.

  12. FEEDBACK – 2nd Day – 11 Sep 12 They are yet to see the garbage behind the wall. Any smell we ask ?? They ask, “What smell “ ?? PUTRID to NO SMELL in a Jiffy ??? PUTRID to NO SMELL in a Jiffy ???

  14. 12 Sep 12 : FEEDBACK – 3rd Day Bad Odor / Smell had been eliminated completely. Standing very close, there is a WEAK PEPERMINTY smell , sometimes.

How would you feel if every meal you ate was with flies humming around and an overpowering stench is all pervading 24/7 ??? Where will you get clean drinking water if your source is contaminated by leachates? Closed landfill All liners leak… Leachates from landfill enters environment

  23. TRIAL REMEDIATION OF LEACHATES 25 ml, 50 ml and 100 ml in two trays each. One tray in each category given additional nutrient Balance leachates kept separately as original sample for comparison. Results Awaited…
