Carcieri joined the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) Director James R. Capaldi to christen the Iway Providence River Bridge during a special ceremony at Pier 2 in Quonset Point/Davisville, RI. Other event participants included Senator Lincoln Chafee, Senator Jack Reed, and Congressman James Langevin. The new Providence River Bridge is the signature structure for the Iway, otherwise known as the I-195 Relocation Project. The center span of the bridge, which is 164 feet wide, 400 feet long and 80 feet high, floated up Narragansett Bay to its permanent location in Providence, RI, just south of the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier, during the early morning hours of Sunday, August 27, 2006.

Agenda and Construction Photographs Also included was a speakers list featuring members of the Congressional delegation and the Governor as well as the Director of the RI Economic Development Corporation and the Director of RIDOT. Photographs of the bridge’s unique architecture were also included in the press kit.

Souvenir “Bridge” Deck Attendees received a souvenir “Bridge Deck” of cards featuring the Iway logo upon arriving. “Enjoy this Bridge Deck while you wait for ours!” - Souvenir packaging Deck packaging featured information on the Providence River Bridge construction as well as instructions on how to play the game of bridge.

Project Fact Sheet “This type of bridge, also known as a Neilson-Lohse bridge, is widely used in Japan and has also been built in Europe because of the aesthetic appeal inherent in its superior structural form.” – Fact Sheet • Identifies engineer, architect, contractor, erector, fabricator and transporter for the project. • Details project specifications. • Explanation of Neilson-Lohse bridge style and unique attributes of the bridge. “The Providence River Bridge network arch is structurally significant because it will be the first skewed network arch bridge in the U.S. and is unique in that it uses three arches rather than two because of its large width.” – Fact Sheet

  8. Public Viewing Sites and Tentative Schedule • Identifies safe and accessible sites where bridge float will be visible to the public. • Lays out most recently revised schedule and corresponding actions taking place. • Notes schedule is subject to revision in the case of inclement weather.
