  1. Honor Code Progress Council on Presidential Affairs Jess Zimmerman & Bryan Findley, Chairmen, Academic Affairs Committee

  2. Ad-hoc Committee We wanted to form a committee to investigate whether or not Butler University Would benefit from an honor code. This committee will be comprised of students, faculty, and administration so that each voice is represented.

  3. A brief Timeline • a.     07/03/07 – Met with Dean Sharer, Dr. Morrel, and Dean Zimmerman for a brainstorming over Honor Code • b.     09/07 – Met with Dr. Fong for an informative meeting about Honor Code • c.     10/03/07 – Met with Dr. Johnson for an informative meeting about Honor Code • d.     10/10/07 – Met w/ Dean Sharer, Dr. Morrel, and Dean Zimmerman to finalize presentation before Faculty Assembly Executive Committee (FAEC). • e.     10/15/07 - Met with Dean Andritz over College of Pre-Heath Sciences’ look into department Honor Code • f.     10/19/07 –Presentation to FAEC • g.     11/06/07 – Met with Academic Affairs (AA) of FAEC • h.     11/14/07 – AA FAEC approved and communicated with rest of FAEC • i.     11/16/07 – FAEC asked for more evidence of honor code to be student driven • j.     01/10/08 – Met with Council of Deans and Provost to discuss Honor Code • k.     02/08/08 – Honor Code resolution passes in SGA assembly • l.     02/10/08 – FAEC approves and will assist in ad hoc investigation committee.

  4. TITLE: IN SUPPORT OF THE CREATION OF AN AD-HOC COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE THE POSSIBILITY OF AN HONOR CODE AT BULER UNIVERSITY

  5. WHEREAS, there has been significant interest in multiple colleges within Butler University in developing college-wide honor codes; andWHEREAS, the possibility of a university-wide honor code has not yet been investigated; andWHEREAS, there is student, faculty, and administrative interest in researching and determining the level of need that Butler University has for a university-wide honor code; andWHEREAS, honor codes can take a variety of forms ranging from purely academic codes to codes that govern the entire student experience; andWHEREAS, similar institutions have already either begun the process of investigating or implementing or have already implemented honor codes on their campuses; therefore be itRESOLVED, the Student Government Association of Butler University encourages the creation of an ad-hoc committee consisting of students, faculty, and administration; andRESOLVED, this committee will be tasked with investigating the need for and desire for a university-wide honor code at Butler University and will present their findings and decisions to the Butler University population; and be it furtherRESOLVED, this committee shall take no action regarding the implementation of an honor code at Butler University beyond presenting their findings and determinations.

  6. Taking shape… • Faculty: • Dr. Bill Walsh and Dr. Derek Reid • Administrators: • Dr. Judy Morel, Dr. Greg Sharer (to end the semester), soliciting another (two?) administrative representative(s) • Students: • Brian Findley, Jess Zimmerman, two interested SGA representatives

  7. Goals • Determine, through research and intrinsic study, what kind of an honor code, if any, would be beneficial to Butler University. • Present findings and recommendations to Dr. Fong, administrators, Faculty Assembly/Senate, Student Government Association.

  8. Means of Achieving Goals: Research • Determine what constitutes an honor code. • Learn about different kinds of honor codes. • What are pros and cons of each kind? • How would each kind affect Butler University students, faculty, and administration?

  9. Means of Achieving Goals: Research • Research honor codes at peer institutions: * The top five Master’s Universities in US News & World Report rankings * Schools to which we lose prospective students

  10. Means of Achieving Goals: Intrinsic study • Ask questions: • Why would an honor code help or hurt Butler University? • What does the University population want and need? • Will an honor code boost the reputation of the school or be a recruiting tool? • What are the perspectives of students, administration, faculty?

  11. Finally: Achieve the Goals • Make a decision • Formulate a recommendation • Present research and recommendation to: • Student Government Association • Faculty Assembly/Senate • Administration • Dr. Fong
