Agenda • Introduce the XBRL International, Taxonomy Architecture Guidance Task Force (TAG-TF). • Activities to date. • Upcoming release of Taxonomy Guidance Document V1. • How the XBRL community can influence future versions. • Questions.
The XII TAG-TF • Formed in March 2012 as a Task Force of the XII Best Practice Board. • Chartered to: • Record prevalent taxonomy architectures. • Evaluate standard practices. • Identify patterns and profiles. • Document the above as a Taxonomy Architecture Guidance. • Diverse group of XBRL experts, both in background and geography.
Observation framework • Template for observations created to capture >100 aspects of taxonomy. • Included sections for: • Taxonomy aims and business requirements • Taxonomy metadata • Data modelling • Implementation details • Creating extensions
Survey • 14 distinct taxonomies selected. • Taxonomies must be non trivial and in production use. • Survey carried out or reviewed by taxonomy authors and decision makers. • No self-organisation of architectures found.
Taxonomy Guidance Document • Audience: Taxonomy architects (mainly technical). • Aim 1: “to increase the understanding around what architectural choices are important and what approaches are available”. • Aim 2: “inform of the possible impact of architectural decisions”. • Source:“the practical application of XBRL and empirical data taken from actual reporting programs”. • Conclusions: “good practice can be considered as choosing the best fit for a specific reporting requirement”.
Upcoming release • Version 1 contains something for everyone: • Introduction and importance of taxonomy architecture. • How to characterise your taxonomy and use the document. • Designing taxonomies for extensions. • Modelling of tables and lists, using tuples and dimensions. • Methods and best practice for the construction of labels. • To be released for public comment in Q1 2014.
Future • Once initial framework in V1 is complete, can expect frequent new releases. • Future versions need to reflect high priority items. • Seek input from the community on the high priority Taxonomy Guidance items. • Starts today! Pick up a questionnaire and tell us what you want first.
Call for participation • We still have more work to do! • If you are interested and involved in taxonomy architecture and design and can spare some time – get in touch! • tagtf@xbrl.org • Original CFP document - xbrl.org/sites/xbrl.org/files/imce/Call%20for%20Participants%20TAGTF.pdf
