I needed a new wardrobe for this Dean job. • Born in Pittsburgh - 1957 (go Steelers!!) • Inner City High School • Middle Class Background • Cornell BS, MENG • Michigan PhD • Industrial Engineering and Operations Research • Married, 4 great kids, one teaches 5th grade in Brooklyn • 26 years at UA • Positive Attitude – Let’s get to work! After 20 months on the job! I am still smiling! But…. My golf swing has struggled for a while!

Keys for Success • Engineers are grown over time, they do not magically appear • Math and Science skills need to be nurtured and stretched • Students in traditionally underrepresented groups have fewer role models – so they may need a slight “push” • The goal should be to nurture and grow interest and curiosity – not train engineers! • Fundamentals are critical!
