It never hurts to ask

It never hurts to ask. Energy is created largely, by super-heated steam that spins turbines. The turbine spins a polarized shaft creating an electric current. The question is, what is heating the water…. Unfortunately much of the U.S. energy production has been generated by fossil fuels

  1. It never hurts to ask

  2. Energy is created largely, by super-heated steam that spins turbines

  3. The turbine spins a polarized shaft creating an electric current

  4. The question is, what is heating the water…

  5. Unfortunately much of the U.S. energy production has been generated by fossil fuels Coal, being one of the largest contributors

  6. Coal is mined from fossilized plant and animal matter

  7. To create 1kWh of electricity 0.8 lbs. of coal is required

  8. Under-whelmed?

  9. Average U.S. household consumes 850 kWh/month

  10. Average U.S. household consumes 850 kWh/month 680 lbs. of coal every month

  11. Still not impressed?

  12. Our facility The Architecture building Consumes approximately 532,000 kWh/month (conditioning the building environment alone)

  13. Our facility The Architecture building Consumes approximately 532,000 kWh/month (conditioning the building environment alone) Compare with the average household usage of 850 kWh/month

  14. Our facility The Architecture building Consumes approximately 532,000 kWh/month (conditioning the building environment alone) Compare with the average household usage of 850 kWh/month that is approximately 625 homes

  15. 532,000kWh/month translates to about 425,600 lbs. of coal

  16. 532,000kWh/month translates to about 425,600 lbs. of coal 425,600 lbs. of coal every month…..now that is a big deal So, we got an idea Would it be possible to vary the amount of time that our building is conditioned?

  17. yes!

  18. After meeting with the campus’ Physical Plant Assistant Director And meeting with our very own Dean Gatzke We found common ground

  19. The schedule will be shortened for a small amount of time in the wee morning hours

  20. What impact with this small change have?

  21. What impact with this small change have? Saving: 21,600 kWh/month

  22. What impact with this small change have? Saving: 21,600 kWh/month 17,280 lbs. of coal

  23. What impact with this small change have? Saving: 21,600 kWh/month 17,280 lbs. of coal 36,720 lbs. of CO2

  24. What impact with this small change have? Saving: 21,600 kWh/month 17,280 lbs. of coal 36,720 lbs. of CO2 146 lbs. of NO

  25. What impact with this small change have? Saving: 21,600 kWh/month 17,280 lbs. of coal 36,720 lbs. of CO2 146 lbs. of NO 280 lbs. of SO2 which also translates to about $13,200 per year
