Art Colleges & Art Programs Art colleges and art programs within a university setting require 15-20 portfolio pieces from High school applicants. Regardless of what your art major will be the art schools all require a portfolio consisting of black and white observation pieces drawn from life; including a self-portrait, a still life, a pair of shoes or a room interior are among some of the requirements. You are also going to work in color with soft, oil pastels and color pencils. Paint with watercolors, tempera paint, acrylic and oil paint. You will create artworks from your imagination to show the level of your creativity and technical mastery.
