  2. The Educational Landscape • Resident physicians are adult learners with multiple competing demands on their time. • Physician teachers are often challenged to cover large amounts of information dense material in a short amount of time

  3. Challenges that we face with Traditional Lecture Format 1. Resident fatigue and distraction 2. Teacher “time crunch” 3. Information dense material 4. One-way flow of information 5. Short attention spans 6. Poor long term knowledge retention

  4. Traditional Lecture Format, continued: • Sustained attention is known to be challenging for adult learners • There’s evidence in the literature that students remember things the best in the first 5 minutes of a lecture • The average adult attention span is 15 minutes

  5. What is an Audience Response System? • A tool that facilitates interaction between teacher and audience • Simultaneously collects and analyzes data • Available from many different vendors, with a wide range of costs, functions, strengths and weaknesses

  6. Three Key Components of an Audience Response System (ARS): Software 2. Receiver a. Infrared b. Radiofrequency 3. Response Devices

  7. Benefits of an Audience Response System: • Increases attendance (Mayo) • Increases learner engagement by allowing all students to answer all questions • Gives instructors the ability to emphasize and test understanding of important concepts • Periodic “clicker breaks” help relieve student fatigue and “restart the attention clock” • Increases knowledge retention (Am J Obstetr Gyn)

Uses of an Audience Response System In Lectures • At the start: To test the audience’s baseline understanding of concepts • During your talk: • To tailor your presentation based upon the audience’s baseline • understanding of concepts (“Conditional Branching Option”) • At the end: To test in real time the understanding of key concepts

Conditional Branching Option: Ask the audience a question using the Audience Response System: If they demonstrate poor understanding of the topic, then the ARS system will proceed with the next set of content materials in your presentation If they demonstrate good understanding of the topic, then the ARS system will skip the next set of content materials in your presentation and move on
