  1. Bellwork • Create a title page for “Cardiovascular System” (if you have not done this already…) • Write the following objective: • SWBAT describe the anatomy of the heart

  2. Cardiovascular System Anatomy of the Heart

  3. Function • Transportation • Heart is muscular pump • Blood vessels are one way tubes to transport blood • Blood is the vehicle • Oxygen • Nutrients • Cell waste • Hormones

  4. Anatomy of the heart • Size of your fist • Weighs less than 1 pound • Apex points toward left hip • Base is at top of heart where vessels emerge

  5. Coverings and wall • Enclosed by double layer membrane called the pericardium • Protects heart, anchors to surrounding structures • Produces fluid that allows heart to beat easily • Heart wall made of 3 layers: • Epicardium (outer) • Myocardium (middle) • Endocardium (inner)

  6. Epicardium (outer) • Continuous with pericardium • Hugs the outside of the heart

  7. Myocardium (middle) • Thick bundles of cardiac muscle • Contracts

  8. Endocardium (inner) • Thin layer lining heart chambers • Continuous with vessels entering/leaving the heart

  9. Chambers & great vessels • 2 atria: top chambers • Where blood enters the heart • 2 ventricles: bottom chambers • Separated by intraventricular septum • Thick muscular walls to pump blood • We will talk about the flow of blood tomorrow!
