  1. The Dial Direct Pothole Brigade

  2. Dial Direct: • Introduced in 2003 • Become one of SA’s leading short-term insurers • Car, Home, Business and lifestyle insurance products • Focused on offering “simple, smart” and innovative insurance solutions

  3. Why the Pothole Brigade? • Brand fit – “simple, smart” solution • Topical and meaningful • Fewer claims for motorists and insurers

  4. The beginning: • Initial Pilot Phase began with GPDRT in August 2010 and with JRA October 2010 • Working together with Government to make a difference • 1 x Jetpatcher vehicle • Important to test machinery • Potholes repaired proactively • Positive response from members of the public and media

  5. Official Launch: • Official launch with Lead SA, JRA, COJ and GPDRT in January 2011 • Implemented innovative website and cellphone reporting functionality • Shift from proactive repairs to receiving reports from the public • Initial capacity to fill 900 potholes per month with 1 x Jetpatcher truck • Dial Direct have since implemented an additional 2 trucks to meet demand and are now able to fill over 3 000 pothole per month

  6. Unique reporting system: • Via website, mobi-site and USSD (cellphone) by dialing *120*1551# • Each pothole site report receives a unique reference number for tracking • Pothole inspectors grade the potholes • Potholes in the area and scope of repair are repaired • Potholes which are beyond repair scope are referred

  7. Project management and Growth: • Trafficare is a close corporation that creates solutions to traffic related problems by enhancing road infrastructure through, inter alia, encouraging partnerships between business and government. • Trafficare manage the Pothole Brigade on behalf of Dial Direct • Unique Jetpatcher repair method: • Jetpatcher has been in operation for over 20 years in over 15 countries worldwide • Self contained unit • Long lasting high quality repairs with minimal wastage • Ease of use and increased productivity

  8. Stage One:Using the high volume velocity blower, the Jetpatcher blows the loose debris from the pothole, cleaning it and preparing it for the next stage. • Stage Two:The Jetpatcher then coats the pothole with an asphalt emulsion which seals the pothole and prevents further damage occurring due to moisture. • Stage Three:Aggregate is then introduced into the pothole. The aggregate is mixed with asphalt emulsion and blown into the pothole at high velocity. • Stage Four:After the pothole has been effectively sealed and filled, a light layer of dry aggregate is applied to the patch, preventing the patch from adhering to car tyres prior to the emulsion fully curing. The patch is now ready for traffic

  9. Milestones: • 10 000 pothole repaired by middle of March 2011 • Participated with GPDRT to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day • Over 30 000 potholes filled to date • Over 2 000 tons of aggregate • Over 160 000 liters of bitumen • Project has grown from 2 to 27 staff

  10. Next steps: • Pilot with JRA/COJ has expired – hope to continue in the future • Soon to begin repairs on the Ekurhuleni roads • Continue to repair on GPDRT roads • Hope to expand project to the rest of Gauteng over time • Explore co-sponsorship and co-funding opportunities

  11. Thank You
