  1. National History Day(NHD)

  2. What is National History Day • NHD is a project that will allow you to engage in real historical research on a topic that interests you • Each year more than 500,000 students throughout the country participate in regional, state, and national competitions • You will choose a topic that has to do with this year’s theme), will research and analyze it, then create a project • Theme this year is “Leadership and Legacy in History”

  3. Categories of Projects • Exhibit • Paper • Website • Documentary • Performance • With the exception of the paper, all projects can be done alone or in groups

  4. The Project • We will be talking about different components on Fridays during class • The vast majority of research and work will be done outside of class • You will need to do more than internet research, you will need to go to libraries, museums, etc. • Feel free to ask for help whenever you need it • Final projects are due on December 3rd , but there are various components due throughout the semester

  5. Leadership • Leadership- the act of leading; providing motivation, guidance, or direction, usually from a position of authority • Leaders often personify admirable values such as courage, selflessness, ingenuity, and patriotism • Leaders can be good, but can also be bad • The impact of a leader does not have to be global can be local

  6. Legacy • What is handed down to us from our ancestors or predecessors- what is left behind for future generations- such as ideas and accomplishments • Sometimes legacies are not understood until long after a leader has passed away • Often reformers are considered radicals in their time • Sometimes legacies depend on perspective- not all legacies are positive, some are controversial

  7. Theme- Leadership and Legacy in History • Examples of leadership and legacy can be found everywhere! Military, politics, social movements, science, the arts, education, religion, economics, etc; also think about local and state history • Don’t forget the “in history” part- your topic must be historical- not a current event- as a general rule- at least 20 years ago • Need to be sure that your project focuses on BOTH Leadership AND Legacy!
