  2. What is Autism? • Autism is a complex disorder of brain development. Every individual with autismis unique. However, these characteristics are common in varying degrees by: • Difficulties in social interaction • Verbal and nonverbal communication • Repetitive behaviors • Intensely focused interests

  3. What is Autism?Continued • Difficulty understanding language and social cues • Excessive or minimal speech • Concrete thinker, often has difficulty with abstract concepts • Social awkwardness • Intense interests or concentration • Repetitive behaviors such as pacing, rocking or hand flapping

What is Autism?Continued • Sensitivity to light, sound, smell or other sensory issues • Anxiety or abnormal fears • Complex and in some cases challenging behaviors • Difficulty managing transitions or changes in routine • Excellent memory for facts and statistics • Adheres to rules and honesty sometimes to a fault • Musical, mathematical, technological, artistic ability or interest

  5. What is Autism? • Autism never goes away. If someone has autism they have it for life. • Autism is the fastest growing disability in the world. More children have autism than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes, and cancer combined. 1 in 68 children born today will be diagnosed with autism. Boys are more prevalent than girls and 1 in 44 boys will be diagnosed with autism.

HOMES FOR AUTISM • Non-Profit: 501 (c) (3) Michigan Corporation • In existence since 1993 • 6 homes in south east Michigan • 3 bed rooms 1-2 bath in regular subdivisions • Redford Waterford Livonia Ypsilanti Howell Auburn Hills • Adults who have autism live there • 24/7 care with care givers hired by clients

  8. Why Homes For Autism? • Children with autism become adults with autism • Parents getting older • Children cannot support themselves • Children cannot live alone

  9. Procedure for Homes • Buy home in regular subdivision • Mortgage property: X% down: (re)financing First 5 homes • Agreement with client where compensation is paid for use of the home: Lease • Clients maintain home and pay utilities • Significant repairs paid by HFA: old homes need repairs

  10. Our MO • The client must be in the system: permanently disabled by Social Security • Client can obtain additional funding: Medicaid/ Food Stamps • Portion of money is paid for use of home • Rule of thumb charges

Relationships • Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County: their relationship with contributor suppliers, contractors & workers • Agreement with Habitat: just a builder no charge for contributed materials builder % HFA: First non-profit to have agreement with Habitat in Michigan Former State Senator Jim Marleau Legislator of year: Michigan HFH

Supportive Housing exemption: operating school tax levy Affidavit sent to MSHDA where individual has less than 30% annual median income Affidavit sent to local municipality with approved MSHDA affidavit
