  4. A Growing Economy • Aftermath of Han collapse – *cities damages, farms burned, artisans made fewer goods, farmers grew less, merchants had less to trade • *Tang brought peace by giving land to farmers

  5. A Growing Economy • *Irrigation was improved • Developed new kinds of rice • *Grew well in poor soil • *Produced more per acre • *Grew faster • *Resistant to disease

  6. A Growing Economy • *Tea – became a popular drink • *Roadways and Waterways built • *Travel easier in and out of China • *Trade increased with Asia • Silk road under China’s control
