  1. Parking Lot • I love you, but don’t come to me with questions & concerns during the Do-Now • Please write your question on a post-it (located on the hand sanitizer by the door) • I will answer it during a Parking Lot address after the announcements

  2. Student of the Day • Inspired by my irritation with WSM • Love the idea… • hate how infrequent it is… • hate how few students get nominated • We’re going to try doing student of the day

What Privileges Will Student of the Day Win? • A same-day parent call/handwritten letter home (student choice of either) • Name posted on my whiteboard for a week • Leave the classroom first, at the end of the period • Everyone else has to stay seated until the Student of the Day leaves • Student may choose a song to “exit to

  4. How will it work? • I will nominate 3 candidates before the daily exit ticket • Students will put their heads down and vote • Candidate with the most votes will win student of the day

  5. HOW DO YOU GET NOMINATED AND WIN?

  6. DO-NOW: DWD • On a daily basis you will have a choice for your Do-Now • You can continue writing on a topic you have already begun • You can start over with a new prompt that will be projected on the board

  24. CLAIM STATEMENT: Teacher Model On July 18th, 1925, Adolf Hitler published his first book Mein Kampf. Within this novel, Hitler chronicles a multiplicity of personal “struggles” related to the Jewish faith and his future plans for Germany. In order to gain the support of his readers and to additionally convince them to fight (physically and metaphorically), Hitler asserts, “He who wants to live must fight, and he who does not want to fight in this world where eternal struggle is the law of life has no right to exist.”

  26. CLAIM STATEMENT: Example 1 At one point in the novel, the reader observes a series of socially confrontational encounters that Holden shares with Ackley, his roommate at PenceyPrep. Although Holden continuously comments on how much he dislikes Ackley’s habits, he still invites him to the movies. Even though Ackley says yes, Holden thinks, “It took him about 5 hours to get ready” (36/47) and reveals his impatience.

Because he finds himself alone again, Holden begins to feel the weight of being on his own in New York City. On his way to the elevator, he thinks, “I wasn’t sleepy or anything, but I was feeling sort of lousy. Depressed and all. I almost wished I was dead” (90/118).
