  2. Types of Writing Review Word Description This writing tells a story, and so it does not follow a traditional essay format. Provides an overview that presents the main points and makes summarizing statements. Should not contain author opinion. This writing seeks to influence the way the reader thinks or sees a situation summary persuasive informative descriptive narrative

  3. Informative Writing Title your notes Informative Writing 10.8.12 Answer the following questions in your notes: When is it important to avoid opinion in writing? Do journalists (news writers) have a responsibility to avoid opinion? Why or why not? How do you recognize when writing contains opinion?

  4. Recognizing Opinion in Writing As long as a statement can be factually proven, it is likely to avoid opinon. Look for word choice (WC) that expresses opinion - typically with adjectives and adverbs.

  6. Underline each of the following sentences that expresses opinion and circle the opinion words: Jack London has an amazing writing style. The story we read had an interesting message. Edgar Allan Poe was neither wealthy nor famous during his lifetime. Langston Hughes wrote beautiful poetry. Lyric poetry was originally sung to a lyre.
