Please contact LTC DeBolt at mikedebolt@live.com if you can help ORIENTEERING Creighton University and the Corps of Cadets from the Black Wolves Battalion will host an Orienteering Competition to be held on Saturday, 21 Sep 2013, at Platte River State Park, NE. The intent for this event is to allow JROTC cadets a chance to become more proficient at their orienteering skills by allowing them to train in more than one area to prepare for this event. Even though this is a competition, the goal is to develop the skills of these young cadets to be better citizens and give them the chance to overcome new and exciting challenges. Team members are: Captain Taylor Feltner, Tre Lewis, Morgan Sayler, Selena Gray, Katie Glessman, Alan Jurvud, Robert Moller, Will Combs, Ryan Burks, Sabrina Carmichael, Kyle Rudolf,, Josh Guerra, Haley Jackson and Donovan Carter. Green Gazette VOL 13, Issue 2 September 2013Benson High School JROTC Benson Community Day Parade Cadets Feltner, Gray, Mayor Stothert, L. Green, C. Green Benson Days, the annual community celebration presented by the Benson Business Association, was held Saturday, July 27th. Events include an 8 a.m. pancake breakfast in front of the Main stage, 61st and Maple Streets; 10 a.m. Benson Neighborhood Association’s annual parade from Omaha Benson High School through downtown Benson; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. activities along Maple from 59th to 63rd Streets. Included was a Kid Zone at the Benson Community Center, more than 80 artists and vendor booths, farmers market, live music on the Main stage and open houses at various businesses. Benson JROTC led the parade with a Color Guard consisting of Commander Selena Gray, Liz Green, Courtney Green and Taylor Feltner. Carrying the JROTC Banner were Robert Moller and Katie Glessman. The cadets had the chance to meet Omaha Mayor Jean Stothertand tell her about their selection to represent Nebraska in the 70th Anniversary D-Day Parade.

Honor Unit with Distinction Benson High School Army JROTC was organized in 1936 and is considered one of the nation's top ROTC units and has been awarded Honor Unit with Distinction for the last nineteen years in a row. The unit first earned the award of Excellence in 1938-1939. December 11th, Benson JROTC will go for an unprecedented 20th Gold Star. Alumni and family members will be invited to attend. Currently, 137 students are participating in this years program. Legion of Valor The Legion of Valor, Bronze Cross for Achievement is to stimulate development of leadership, gives an award annually for achievement of scholastic excellence in military and academic subjects. This award, a bronze cross and certificate, is awarded to an outstanding MS III cadet. Annually, 20 awards are given out on a national level. Benson cadets have been recognized 11 times since the conception of this award with the last three recipients being West Point Graduate Aaron Green (2009) and Alexis Bradley (2011) and this year’s winner Cadet Elizabeth Green (2013). She will be presented the award September 16th at the OPS School Board Meeting. He was the sole survivor in his Humvee. He is now a stand-up comedian and motivational speaker. He spoke of personal courage. They also listened to an incredible speaker who showed honor. Back in 2002 retired Marine Staff Sergeant Tim Chambers decided he wanted to do something to show all the other vets how much he cared, so he spontaneously stepped into the road to salute the riders during a 3 hour veteran’s motorcycle ride in Washington, D.C. That first salute has now become an annual event. Governor Dave Heinemann, a West Point graduate, spoke of integrity and always doing the right thing. It may not be popular, but integrity is what people respect above else and will follow you when things are tough. Honor*Integrity*Personal Courage – R U HIP?
