  2. Islam • Muhammad was born in Quaraysh in 571 • Born into proverty • Gets into Caribbean trade • Marries Quadisha • Mecca is the holy city • Ka’bba site of God • Writes the Koran after meeting with Gabriel

  3. Islamic Slave Trade • Located on the East Africa • lasted for over 1,000 years • Started in 17th Century • draw local accessible goods • grass roots movement • Victories increased trade routes

  4. Crone • believes Muhammad was accepted based on political issues • Questions if Mecca is Mecca • Commercial fares show where they came from • But, Mecca is not shown

  5. Economics • Arabia- center of wealth • military defeats to the west • inherit gold to the east • Looters claimed 20% of loot • Rest went to the government

  6. Technology • Gained technology from Sussainates • Coins: Dirhem (silver) and Dinar (gold) • Along the Amber Route, dinar and dirhem were found

  7. Differences • Islamic slave trade based on status rather than labor • Slaves and Concubines were abundant • Slaves could move up in social hierarchy

  8. Growth due to trade • Harun al- Rahed had a public domain worth over a billion people during his ruling • 762: Couple hundred people lived in Baghdad • 800: Grew to 2 million inhabitants • 1300: Italian city-states had 100,000 people during the Renaissance

  9. Cairo • Cairo was created in 970 • Founded by Fatamid • wealthiest country under religious tolerance • Sects: Sunni and Sh’ita • Sects were accepted • Both sects were taxed

  10. Revolts • Mahdi Revolt 1800’s • led by purist to go back to core religion • Revolt of the Naked • led by the Zotts and Djatts • Copic workers lead a revolt in Egypt • Revolts were crushed by Ottomans (muslims)
