  1. 1 Canadians are meeting more polar bears, when they wander into towns. Why?

  2. Polar Bears are in danger They need sea ice to hunt their food But hotter summers in the Arctic are melting the winter ice too quickly So hungry bears are wandering into towns....

  3. 2 How long before the Arctic ice melts completely: 10, 20, 50, 100 years?

  4. According to the latest report, the ice could melt entirely during the summertime in 20 years • This would leave the Polar Bears with no habitat

  5. 3 How could the melting ice affect the UK’s climate?

  6. The UK’s climate is much hotter than it should be. It is on the same latitude as Alaska The extra heat comes from a warm water current – ‘the Gulf Stream’ Some scientists believe that the meltwater (from the ice) could ‘switch off’ the Gulf Stream This would create a ‘big chill’ in the UK

  7. 4 Global warming is caused by too much greenhouse gas. Which gas traps the most heat?

  8. Carbon dioxide may be the most important, because of the quantities released But the most powerful greenhouse gas is methane. It traps 21 times as much heat as CO2

  9. Climate Change

  10. What do you know about climate change? 1. 3. 2.

  11. What do you know about climate change? 4. 6. 5.

  15. Climate change is beginning to cause big changes in the environment.... Ice melting faster than it can be replaced in the Arctic

  16. Climate change is beginning to cause big changes in the environment.... The oceans warming up – their water is expanding and causing sea levels to rise

  17. Climate change is beginning to cause big changes in the environment.... Changes in where different species of plants and animals can live

  18. Climate change is beginning to cause big changes in the environment.... The extra heat energy is also beginning to cause large-scale changes in the weather

  19. How is this affecting real people?

  20. In Nepal the risk of flooding is getting greater with climate change. These villagers are filling metal cages called gabions with stones. They put them along the river band to protect against flooding.

  21. Drought in Kenya means there is little water left for herds to drink and many have died as a result. Maasi shepherds like this one now have to drive their herds up to 45km to get water.

  22. Climate change increases the risk of flooding in Bangladesh. Practical Action shows communities how to grow crops on a raft made of hyacinth roots. This means when their land floods the crops will not be ruined. They also breed ducks rather than goats.

  23. This family in Bangladesh has had its home flooded. Floods are more frequent and unpredictable as a result of climate change.
