  8. Why iPads? • Cost: • About 60% of a District standard desktop with monitor • About 45% of a District standard laptop • Technical Reviews of Tablets: • Rankings • Industry legacy • Apps • Local piloting • Consistency with our Assistive Technology program

Assistive Technology Implementation • Continue to identify necessary apps to meet district-wide learning and achievement goals • Continue to identify apps to meet IEP goals – which includes post-secondary transition planning • Finalizing plan for implementation, including assessment/data collection, district-wide • Starting with 70 iPads • Sample video

Early Learning Implementation • Online student portfolio system, Teaching Strategies Gold, utilizes electronic data (video, photos, work samples, etc.) • Teaching Strategies Gold evaluates 38 objectives and 17 dimensions across the developmental color band for students. • Use of iPads for collecting and uploading student data will enable teachers to determine preliminary levels and provide appropriate instruction. • PALS online scoring for more detailed data • iPods are used for student music listening stations – the District is evaluated based on student independence in this area • Starting with 53 iPads and 40 iPods

  11. Elementary Implementation • Students and classroom teachers in Grades 3-4 will be issued iPads in 2013-14 • Addressing Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts • K-8 Mathematics program review will incorporate the iPads

Secondary Implementation • Students and classroom teachers in Grade 6 at DeLong will be issued iPads in 2013-14 • Addressing the reduction of three fewer computer labs as a result of the referendum construction design • Will incorporate the technology into each content area • Future phases involve Grade 6 at Northstar and South, and Mathematics classrooms at Grades 7 and 8 • Piloting continues at the high school level using iPads and Chromebooks

Timeline • Summer: Issue iPads to staff with professional development • Early fall: Students begin to use iPads in class • Throughout the fall: Education with students on digital citizenship • Late fall: After mastering key digital citizenship indicators and conducting meetings with families, iPads may go home with students • Winter: Update to the Board on implementation progress

  18. Project Costs • $1.14 M – iPads and cases • 71% paid by Microsoft settlement money • Remaining funds from existing Technology Department budget • Collaboration between District departments for future funding – stay within existing funding levels
