  2. 2004 Post Secondary Going and Performance Datawww.hepc.wvnet.edu • Sixty percent of the 18,009 students graduating from WV High Schools attended post secondary institutions. • 7,961 attended WV Public Colleges and Universities • 2,844 attended elsewhere (private or out of state) • Their average ACT composite score was 20.4 • Thirty-one percent took the ACT core in high school • Thirty-seven percent completed 30 hours their first year • Twenty-nine percent were in a developmental math course • Sixteen percent were in a developmental English course • Thirty-three percent were in a developmental reading or science course

ACT Scores and CourseworkMinimum Core versus Non-Core • ACT Minimum Core • English: 4 years • Mathematics: At least 3 years • Social Sciences: At least 3 years • Natural Sciences: At least 3 years • Historically ACT has reported student performance by “Core” and “Non-Core” course patterns. ACT research shows that it is the rigor of high school courses-rather than simply the number of courses-that best prepares students for college success and is reflected in higher ACT scores.

  4. English One year credit each for English 9, English 10, English 11, English 12. Mathematics One year credit each for Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry One-half year credit each for Trigonometry, Calculus (not Pre-Calculus), other math courses beyond Algebra II (e.g., Computer Math/Computer Science Social Studies One year each for American History, World History, American Government. One-half year credit each for Economics, Geography, Psychology, other History (European, West Virginia, etc.) Natural Sciences One year each for General/Physical/Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics. ACT Core Courses

ACT College Readiness Benchmark Scores • Through collaborative research with postsecondary institutions nationwide, ACT has established the following College Readiness Benchmark Scores: • ACT Subject College Course Benchmark Score • English English Comp. 18 • Math Algebra 22 • Reading Social Sciences 21 • Science Biology 24 • A benchmark score is the minimum score needed on an ACT subject area test to indicate a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher in the corresponding credit-bearing college courses.

They reflect students’ expected growth from EXPLORE to PLAN to the ACT and assume sustained academic effort throughout high school.
