  2. Arrangement The Encyclopedia of American Religions is one book. It is arranged in several ways. 1. By part. 2. By chapter. 3. By religious 'family' (Baptist, Middle Eastern, etc.)‏ In the main body of the text, each religious denomination has a number to make looking up things easier.   3. Scope This encyclopedia covers all religious denominations found in the United States both past and present. Currency Published circa 2003, this is, as far as I know, the most recent edition of this book. I think that it is reasonable to say that after only five years, this is probably adequately current. Intended Purpose The preface states that the prime directive of this encyclopedia is to provide basic info on each of the hundreds of religions that exist in the US. Other purposes include, as I see it, fostering understanding between religions, and to provide information that the government cannot legally collect themselves. Image from About.com.   4. Formats Only available as a book. Special Features As mentioned before, there are multiple indexes, as well as liberal use of sources, addresses for the headquarters of each group. There are also several parts dedicated to the history of the development of the major religious groups. Authority or Credentials J. Gordon Melton has a Ph.D in History and Literature of Religions. I'm not sure how un-biased this would be considered, but he is also the second most prolific contributor to the Encyclopedia Britannica according to Wikipedia. Image from About.com. Personal Impression After looking up my own religion, which is one that is usually treated with a great deal of ridicule, I was impressed to find that this book treated it with great impartiality, even when I was ready for the opposite. I was also impressed by just how much information it covered, and the scope and detail it used.   6. Complementary Sources There is a plethora of other encyclopedias on religions, from as specific as Native North American, to encompassing the world. Here are just two that I thought might complement the information found in this one. Encyclopedia of World Religions. Encyclopedia Britannica. Unfortunately, I was unable to locate a complete citation. However, if one were able to locate a copy of this book, I have always thought the Encyclopedia Britannica to be one of the best places to find information. http://www.world-religion.org/ I also found this website, which I thought would might be an interesting supplement to traditional encyclopedias.
